Getting Debug Output Log
The Output Log frequently contains helpful debug information that will allow the developer to troubleshoot specific problems. To make sure you have the correct log, please close the game entirely and then send the log before playing any other games. For best results, do this immediately after you encounter the error you are trying to troubleshoot (before you launch the game again).

If you are posting in the Steam forums, then you can go to pastebin.com which allows you to paste the output log text into a webform. Then post the resulting pastebin link into the forum where you are reporting your issue.

Windows PC

Find Disco Dodgeball in your Steam library, right-click on it and go to Properties. Then click on the Local Files tab and choose 'Browse Local Files'. In Windows, open the DiscoDodgeball_Data folder and locate output_log.txt

if you do not see the output log in this directory, try this path:

C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\LocalLow\82 Apps\Disco Dodgeball

Note that AppData is a hidden folder, you'll need to go to 'view' / and check 'hidden items' in the file explorer window.

OSX

In the Finder top toolbar click on 'go', then 'go to folder', and paste in (minus quotes) "~/Library/Logs/Unity". You're looking for the file player.log.

Linux

Look for ~/.config/unity3d/CompanyName/ProductName/Player.log

Server Connection Issues
Symptom: Seeing "Couldn't connect to network. Running in offline mode" in bottom-left corner of main menu when trying to connect to multiplayer match

Likely cause: Antivirus or firewall is blocking connection to servers

Resolution:
  • Add an exception to your Firewall to allow Disco Dodgeball. Example: http://www.wikihow.com/Add-Exceptions-to-Windows-8-Firewall
  • Add an exception to your Antivirus to allow Disco Dodgeball.
  • If you have MalwareBytes anti-malware installed, try going to Malwarebytes > Protection tab > uncheck 'Enable malicious website blocking'
  • Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus just to see if they are the root cause

If the debug log shows "On failed to connect. ExceptionOnConnect" and/or "System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: No such host is known."

Likely cause: your internet connection is down, or you are trying to connect to a local server that is not available.

Resolution:
  • Go to Options / Network. Verify you are not trying to connect to a local server.
  • Try connecting to a different region.
  • Verify your internet connection is active.
  • It's possible one of the server regions is down for maintenance. Check the @ExitGamesStatus twitter feed for updates, and switch to a different region if necessary in Options / Network.

If none of these resolutions work, please create a new post in the Bugs / Troubleshooting section and include your debug output log.
Game crashes or won't launch
This section lists known launch issues and various resolutions, workarounds, and troubleshooting tips.

Problem: Game is crashing on launch

Possible solutions:

Force DirectX 9

Go into your Steam Library, right-click on Disco Dodgeball, choose 'Properties', go to the 'General' tab, click on 'set launch options', and enter this: -force-d3d9

This is due to this Unity issue: http://issuetracker.unity3d.com/issues/crash-slash-image-effects-using-noise-and-grain-image-effect-crashes-windows-standalone-builds-on-gpus-that-do-not-support-dx11

Force DirectX 11

Same as above but type -force-d3d11

Force OpenGL

Same as above but type -force-opengl

Verify integrity of game cache

Run Steam
Right click on Disco Dodgeball
Click "Properties"
Click the "Local Files" tab
Click "Verify integrity of game cache..."
Wait until it is done

Delete local game files and reinstall
Right-click on Disco Dodgeball in your Steam Library
Choose 'Delete Local Content', and confirm
After files are deleted, re-install the game.
(Note: You will not lose stats / items / progress. But you may need to re-equip items)

Disable Steam Overlay
On OSX the Steam Overlay can sometimes cause the game to crash after a few seconds, so you can try turning it off.
Right click on the game in your steam library
Choose Properties
Uncheck "Enable Steam overlay while in-game"

Update video card drivers

For all systems, ensure your video card drivers are using the latest versions.

Check your antivirus settings

I can't give precise instructions here, because it depends on your antivirus program. But sometimes they can block a program from launching. There has been a problem reported with Avast. You can try temporarily turning it off just to see if that's the cause, or add an exception for Disco Dodgeball.

Restart the computer

Add a firewall exception for Disco Dodgeball.

Install Steam Runtime (Linux)

It is possible on Linux to instal Steam without Steam Runtime. This may cause crashes / freezes after a few minutes.

Disable / update Pulse Audio (Linux)

On Linux systems that use Pulse Audio, either make sure it's updated to latest version or disable it. More info: http://test-steamproxy.haloskins.io/app/270450/discussions/1/496880503060651417/?tscn=1451359449

Problem: Video Driver stopped responding

Possible Solution:

Run As Administrator
Go to Disco Dodgeball local files (right-click on game title in Steam Library / Properties / Local Files / Browse Local Files)
Right click on "Disco Dodgeball.exe" and go to the 'Compatibility' tab
Check 'Run this program as an administrator'
Optionally check 'Run in 640x480 screen resolution'

Problem: Message "Failed to start game (Unknown Error)" - seems to affect Mac computers

Solutions:

Run the game as administrator
Find the file Disco Dodgeball.exe
(It's probably located within the folder:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Disco Dodgeball
But if it's not there, rind the game in your library, right click, choose Properties, then Local Files, then Browse Local Files.)
Right click on it
Select "Run as Administrator"
If that doesn't work, go on to the next test.

Run steam as administrator
Exit steam completely: (top left menu) -> Steam -> Exit
Wait a few seconds for it to finish shutting down
Right click the steam icon
Select "Run as Administrator"
Try running the game normally
If that doesn't work, go on to the next test.

Change your " Data Execution Prevention" settings.
See this thread for instructions.

Make sure Disco Dodgeball and Steam are installed on the same disk drive.
Custom music support
The soundtrack in Disco Dodgeball automatically combines the built-in soundtrack along with songs you've downloaded from the Workshop as well as songs you have on your hard drive.

You can view or manage your playlist anytime by going to Options / Audio / Playlist. There you can mute individual songs or change the volume on a per-track basis. Double-click on a song to play it. Also, at any time you can hit N to advance to the next track or B to go back to the previous track.

Workshop Songs

To add a song from the Workshop to your game, first you must subscribe to the Workshop item. Example: http://test-steamproxy.haloskins.io/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=434921120

The next time you launch the game, it'll download that file and add it to your library. (You may need to launch one additional time for it to be visible in the game).

After that point, it'll shuffle into your playlist like a soundtrack song.

Local Song Files

You can select a directory on your computer that Disco Dodgeball will inspect for audio files and shuffle them into your playlist.

To set a folder, go into Options / Audio and paste in the full path of the folder containing your files.

Windows Example: C:\Users\Erik\Music\Dodge
OSX Example: /Users/Erik/Music/Dodge (Note: drive letter is omitted)

One catch is the files must be in the format .wav or .ogg. The game will skip over any incompatible files.

The recommended format is .ogg because it is compressed, while .wav files are uncompressed and very large.

Conversion

To convert songs from another format (e.g. MP3) into .ogg, you can use a program like VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

Once in VLC, go to Media, then Convert / Save. Click Add to find your local file. Then on the bottom right, hit convert / save. Select 'Audio - Vorbis (OGG)' in the drop-down and hit start. Then move your new .ogg file into the designated Disco Dodgeball local music folder.
Steamworks is Off / Not Syncing stats / No XP Level shown
If the title screen says "Steamworks: OFF" in the bottom left then the game did not attach to Steamworks successfully, which causes a bunch of issues, most prominently that your stats and XP level appear to be zero.

- Make sure you're launching the game from within your Steam library, not an external link while Steam is not running.
- Try restarting Steam.
- Right click on the game in your library, click 'Properties', 'Local Files', 'Verify Integrity of game cache'. It may try to re-download some files.
- Try deleting DD from your library and re-installing. (You wont lose any items or stats, but you will need to re-equip your cosmetic items)

The key is you want to see "Steamworks: ON" in the bottom left of the main menu when you launch. That indicates that Steamworks has attached and synched successfully.
Accessing Beta branch builds
From time to time, you may be able to access experimental versions of the game on the beta branch. This will give you an early look at upcoming features as well as help spot & report some bugs.

It's easy to switch between the beta and normal branches, so this isn't a permanent change. Do note however that when are running the beta branch, it is likely that you won't be able to find or play in matches created on the default public version due to compatibility changes.

To activate the Beta branch:

  • Open your Steam Library
  • Right-click on Disco Dodgeball, choose Properties
  • Click on the Betas tab
  • Change 'select the beta you would like to opt into' to the 'beta' option

If it doesn't download immediately, click on the 'Local Files' tab and hit 'verify integrity of game cache'.

If you want to revert back to the main branch, follow the steps above and revert to the 'none' option in the beta menu.
Bad performance / Low Framerate
Computer is powerful, but game is still sluggish
Check to make sure the game is using your graphics card and not the integrated chip. This is especially true for laptops.

Example: If you are running an NVidia card, follow these steps:

Nvidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D settings -> Program Settings -> Add -> Browse -> Brwose to and select 'Disco Dodgeball.exe'

The path to the program will likely look something like this: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Disco Dodgeball

And you can get the exact path from Steam Library -> right click on Disco Dodgeball -> Properties -> Local Files -> Browse local files, then click your mouse into the explorer address bar to see the full path.

Once the game appears in the list of programs to customize, find the 'Power Management Mode' setting and choose 'prefer maximum performance'.

If you also see the setting "Preferred Graphics Processor" set that to your NVidia graphics card instead of 'auto-select' or 'integrated'

Low/Mid range computers
Disco Dodgeball uses some pretty intensive graphics plugins to achieve its visual aesthetic. By default they all start on. It's likely with a low to mid-range computer you may need to disable some or many video effects to achieve solid 60 FPS performance.

Go to Options / Video and see the list of video settings.

The settings that have the highest impact are Screen reflections, Probe reflections, and Volumetric light.

If that doesn't work you may want to disable Antialiasing and Glow.

Video Card issues
The game was updated to use DirectX 11 in the 5.0 update (although it supports DirectX 9 if your video card does not run DX 11).

- Make sure your video card drivers are up-to-date
- Go into your Steam Library, right-click on Disco Dodgeball, choose 'Properties', go to the 'General' tab, click on 'set launch options', and enter this: -force-d3d9
- Same as above but enter: -force-opengl
Can't broadcast / stream video
Some players may see a black screen when trying to use the Steam Broadcast feature.

The solution may be to force DirectX 9.

Go into your Steam Library, right-click on Disco Dodgeball, choose 'Properties', go to the 'General' tab, click on 'set launch options', and enter this: -force-d3d9
Game won't close properly / keeps running after quitting
The symptom is that your computer thinks the game is still running even when it's not, even if Steam is closed. This appears to be a bug with the Steam overlay. To fix:

Disable Steam Overlay
On OSX the Steam Overlay can sometimes cause the game to crash after a few seconds, so you can try turning it off.
Right click on the game in your steam library
Choose Properties
Uncheck "Enable Steam overlay while in-game"

Note: You may need to restart your computer to get Disco Dodgeball to fully close. But once you've done that, and applied the fix above, it should close normally.
Mission Points / Badges
Issue: Unable to craft Mission Badge

Possible causes: using the game via Family Sharing does not allow you to gain inventory items such as the Mission Badges (due to Steam restriction)

Does DD work in offline mode for bot matches when fully update to the latest version?
