Am I completely blind? I can't find a way to save in the middle of a mission!

I'm enjoying the game very much but I've lost the mission progress for the fourth or fith time now. Last time I was forced to re-start after getting to around the 10th or 11th mission. I don't have a lot of "gaming time" so I only play for 30 minutes or an hour at a time. It's disheartening to make progress and then come back in and have to re-start. I just don't have the time to keep re-running the missions to get back to where I was. It seems to be random. I'm running via steam on Mac OSX. Sometimes the...

What do the different levels mean? Does the AI cheat at higher levels, or actually play better?
