I just installed this game on my computer and this crashed just as I bought a locomotive. does anyone know how to fix this?

Hey, I usually play this game single player with no AI. Upgrade Auctions pop up from time to time, and I always bid on them and win(Because no AI). But.. I wonder.. what would happen if I didn't bid? Would I automatically win anyway? Would it become public domain after 10 years? Does it just disappear forever? Has anyone tried this? or know the answer? Thanks in advance~...
