Short review of 'full' game + DLC, purchased on sale for ~$4 (USD):

I expected a bare-bones, yet functional & cute, reproduction of the board game. That is definitely here as "classic mode". Well done.

But there's a whole new mode called "Commanders" that adds special abilities (bombs, etc), differently shaped ships (tetrominos, etc). It turns it into a more exciting game. Almost a combination of Battleship, Minesweeper, and... well something original, I suppose.

I'm very surprised by the quality. The sound effects and music are fine. It's a bit 'mobile' in presentation which doesn't bother me a bit, but (aside from the DLC) there's no micro-transactions or anything. No boosts.

There seems to be 5 A.I. difficulty levels, though only three are visible. The three visible are for single player: Easy, Normal, Hard. They work mostly appropriately. The two hidden difficulty levels are in "multiplayer". If there's no real players waiting, you get a bot with a fake 'human' name. You might get Easy, Normal, or Hard, but also maybe one of the two hidden difficulties: #1: absolutely random nonsense idiot, or #2: unstoppable psychic machine

I think the base price might be a tad high, but I'm still pleasantly surprised with the whole deal. Good stuff. (edit: typos)

Why did I buy and play Battleships? There are four reasons: a mate tempted me to, I have guilty pleasures from PC versions of family board games, It was a dollar-fiddy (plus the same again for the DLC) and 'cos I like like writing funny reviews of board games conversions in some sort of interview format. Today we shall use Jeopardy.

This game allows you to play both regular 10x10 boards traditionally and yet puts wonderful spins on the format so you can instead play with power-ups, different commanders with different skills, and different play areas. WONDERFUL you are now able to play DOUBLE jeopardy, and here is your question:

A: What is GOD this is a grind to get the achievements and will take forever so don't buy it for that whatever you do but playing it at your own pace is fun and it does give you little missions to encourage you to play more, I guess, but eh, it's still just Battleships even with the tweaks and we should remember that small fact?

A: What is Multiplayer? For context, I mean yes in theory you can either play with friends or by matchmaking but I HAVE NEVER made it work, although as the question suggested, the Devs at least realised that having challenges in the game which needed multiplayer, empty lobbies are replaced by bots so you can still pretend you are playing multiplayer, sort of

Yeah, Battleships is a good game and fun to play, so long as you realise that it is just Battleships with some shiny knobs, and you'll never likely find anyone IRL to play against. What's my prize?
