some servers require you run anticheat.
i use r1q2.exe rather than quake2.exe and i have anticheat.dll in my quake2 folder.
more about r1q2 and anticheat can be found at http://www.r1ch.net

Have to agree with everyone below me: Nothing beats Q2.
My question is: How do I play a server on quakeservers? They give me IP's (which of course, in game doesn't do squat), so am I missing something?
I was able to play a few games at http://www.voobly.com - but no one goes there or people don't know about it. I just want to play some good ol Q2 without any complications.
i play a lot of action quake2 and dday normandy
Consult the readme file.
Did you remember to start Q2 with the eraser mod like it says in the readme?
Also if you want to play with bots in CTF copy pak0.pak from the CTF directory to Eraser.
