I really wanted to give this game a positive rating, I really do.

But I feel that after what has been going on, as of currently, mind you, this game does NOT deserve it.

So lets recap the timeline of events:

1. The game has been released at 60 bucks, the port was already problematic at part (random stutters in city parts that seems to be random all across the board) but I was like sure, they can probably fix it (and we had some workarounds).

HOWEVER!

2.Recently, a patch was released with very vague patchnotes, with no clear descriptions whatsoever. That part would be okay, Not really professional, i would add but whatever, I was willing to let this slide.

The part which was not okay, at ALL is that the dear devs managed to break the performance even more! So, even if back before you had somewhat decent performance, now, guess what? NOW IT RUNS EVEN WORSE.

And before you say that "oh, its your potato rig!": Go read the forums, please. Go check the discussions and see all the other people who are also having issues and then come back and tell me its just an isolated issue.

And I think that when I paid 60 BUCKS for a TRIPLE A release, I have every right to be furious and pissy when this is the treatment we are getting. AFTER one MONTH of complete silence, THIS is the response we are getting?

Im sorry, but no. If this is the kind of treatment we can expect with Persona 3 release in next year then I would rather not have anything, because this is unacceptable

Disclaimer: I got this game free of charge, courtesy of the developer through Curator Connect, however this has not influenced my feelings about the game in any shape or form

When taking a first glance at Save me Mr Tako, it is hard to not to have a feeling of sheer nostalgia, considering that the game very much harkens back to the "oldschool" gameboy /monochrome graphics /color palettes, which may or may not a turnoff for some people. But for me personally, it very scratched that itch of mine (having grew up in the late 90-s)

The story of the game is a rather standard affair: A war is being waged between humans and octopuses (yes, really) with our main character Tako who is trying his best to bring peace between the two rivalry factions, despite his entourage highly disappproving of his efforts. While the storyline isnt likely to beat the writing of The Witcher series, it doesnt have to: it does helps to bring context into an already well-rounded platformer and giving a goal for our protagonist to work for.

Gameplay wise, Mr Tako definitely borrowed a bit from games such as Super Mario Land series, Kirby, a Hat in Time and many others: You are plopped into a hubworld in which you are free to explore to your heart content, talk with other octopuses, visit shops and its also from here that you will acces the level portals (with new levels being unlocked along the way).
Most of the time you will go from level to level, collecting feathers and inks while also dodging and neutralising enemies with your ink. Dont let the cutesy artstyle fool you though, as the game does not kid around with difficulty: one hit and you are out. Mercifully though, there are checkpoints scattered around levels and the hats will also help making your life all that easier

But it got a new hat!
And yes, hats are also a thing in this game, which, just like in Hat in Time, will give you various power-ups ranging from special projectiles to use to other perks that will make your life all that easy, such as giving you an additional hit you can survive before you drop dead.

In terms of music, the game keeps in line with its retro/ gameboy sound design and it provides a rather mellow and pleasant vibe that goes along nicely with the overall gameplay (and dare I say, its also that kind of music which i would love to listen to off-game as well).

So how would I rate my gameplay experience so far?

While Im admittedly nowhere near even finished yet, from what I have experienced so far it is without a doubt a very competent title, even if a bit less forgiving than most platformers of that genre. Aesthetically speaking, its very pleasant to look at and it has a good amount of gameplay both for casual and for the completionists out there, definitely would recommend

Special thanks to the developers for having provided us a review copy of the game

Even for a beta, this somehow manages to be even worse than Umbrella Corps (which is saying a lot).

Blend uninteresting gameplay, lackluster gunplay, there is literally no reason whatsoever to play this.

A timeless classic with a gameplay that still feels just as fun in 2020 as it was in 2003

Before i start the review, i would like to emphasise that this negative review isnt directed toward the general game quality other than towards the other factors which makes it hard for me to enjoy/recommend 4 Kings.

4 Kings Slot is one of those unique actual online social casino mmo game so to say, that is aimed at mimicking the thrill of casinos and their games, which for the most part is nailed down as good as it can be. However there is one or rather multiple big problems:

Ingame population

4Kings has been bleeding players ever since like 3 years now, the maximal all time playercount being 446 according to steamcharts, and sadly it has never really recovered as time went by, with usually less than 52-50 players daily. Which, in turn has made the game more like a solo casino experience, with many daily tasks such as the free poker one or the nightclub ones sometimes borderline impossible to complete due to not enough people online (at least on EU servers, cannot exactly report about the other ones).

This is showing an abysmal trend and no matter how many times we were begging/screaming at Digital Leisure for a possible remedy/effort from their part, the only answers we got was:

-"the game is niche/not enough exposure, but we do our best"
-" make sure to recommend this game to your friends and spread the word about it, thxbye"

As much as I understand that its not always possible to get the game on the store frontpage, this kind of "dont care, deal with it" reactions we got so far is not acceptable for me as a player. And until I see some real effort done, Im NOT spending money on ingame purchases, as much as I would like to. Sony recently made cross platform possible, how about you give crossplay a go between the PS4 and PC version so that we arent stuck with what is mostly a ghost town?

Performance issues

Ever since the beta, this game has not been known for necessarily running smoothly. While in their defense they did some optimisation and rehaul done to reduce lag, there is still some room for improvement, especially what comes about loading screens and occasional input delayxs between choosing a game and the time it takes for the game to appear.

Lack of meaningful progression reward system

This is one of those big pet peeves of mine apart the playerbase: the current reward system feels a bit....weak. Things like the calendar login rewards painfully need some rehaul, so that consecutive months cleared give you better rewards and so on, especially RP wise. I understand that they want to encourage people to earn RP through playing the games primarily but come on, would it really kill them to throw us a bone sometimes and give us, idk, 2000 RP login rewards for clearing a month in the calendar? or how about giving us the option to complete daily/weekly tasks for RP?

Also could we please have the option to reset daily tasks at least once a day for free?

To sum up my thoughts? 4 Kings Slot definitely has the potential to be a great casino experience, but the current population/playerbase among other things makes it a bit of a hard recommendation to make. That being said, as soon as I see improvements, I will make sure to update my review accordingly.

Camp Sunshine for me was a very pleasant surprise for me, furthermore it managed to surpass my expectations

In the center of the story we have a young teenage boy Jez, whos sent into Camp Sunshine summer camp by his parents (with a very high implication being that their parents are having a rough time/planning to divorce even? and wanting to avoid their son assisting to all of this). But while at first glance the camp seems to be nothing out of ordinary, little Jez knew that upon waking up in the middle of evening he would find his roommate decapitated, and to make things even worse: a bear mascot is on the loose, massacring every poor souls in his way..

The gameplay in many way feels like a love letter to the popular horror movie Friday the 13 (more specifically that infamous NES game), we must collect various objects and diary notes which unravel further about the story and ultimately putting an end to this madness, while trying to avoid the killer bear And the game doesnt kid around with the difficulty: 2 hits and you are dead. Thankfully the diffculty seems to be rather well scaled and it never fealt too cheap or unfair while managing to keep up the tension to its highest.

Graphics wise the game opts in for a rather good looking pixel art (often frowned upon by many and called lazy), which, while not being anything special, they do help recreating that 80-s retro game vibe. The music and the sound effects get the job done but sadly (and thats my biggest gripe really), they really dont help making the game any memorable or special.

Length wise you should be counting around 5-6 hours, depending of the difficulty and how many times you are fiddling around with certain puzzles/etc. The game doesnt have any sort of new game plus or collectibles to speak of, so the replayability feels a bit limited, aka once you beaten the game, you pretty much have seen anything it has to offer.

Overall speaking, this game is a quite enjoyable indie horror game that everyone should try and play through at least once and while it doesnt bring anything groundbreaking to the table, it gets the horror formula rather well and makes me wish for more.
