First of all I’ve got to say that I’m not a native english speaker so I apologize beforehand for any error or misunderstanding in the review, but I want this to get to as many people as possible, or at least for the developers of the game to be able to understand it if somehow they get to read this review (unlikely, but still...)

I’ll give a little context: I was born in 1993. I think that I was about 7 or 8 years old when I first got my hands on this game for the N64, and with my cousin we spent lots of days and nights playing with it (the good old days, our parents didn’t even know what we were playing at). By then all we could do was entering the super cheat and have fun with it exploring the levels and getting lost, or just kill each other in the multiplayer mode, because the campaign was, obviously, too complicated for us.

Now let’s go to the present (almost). It wasn’t until a few years ago, maybe at age 16 or 18, that I took my old N64 and decided to take this game seriously. I WAS AMAZED. I had read on some forums on the internet that modern games were too easy and simple, and that Turok 2 was the perfect example of how back then good games were elaborate, and well, I just couldn’t agree more with that fact. I completed the whole campaign once and then played each level again 2 or 3 times (with the exception of Port of Adia, the only level I could pass as a kid), and after that I realized that… it wasn’t that hard at all! After the first try I could easily remember where were all the key objects, even in the infamous Lair of the Blind Ones. All you had to do was to use the map to not get lost because, of course, no one would be so stupid to try and memorize it. I ended falling in love with the game and the design of the levels knowing that no modern game could give me that weird sensation of frustration mixed with self-accomplishment.

So as you can imagine I couldn’t be more hyped when I read about Night Dive Studios remastering Turok 2. I waited until I was on summer holidays to buy it and well… starting from Port of Adia I notice some GOOD modifications on the design of the level: the portal to the main hub at the beginning, more enemies (well done, the ammo is almost infinite in this game), and the new zone in the ports where the beacons were located (I always thought it was stupid to separate both zones with a teleport when they were connected actually). On the other hand the “grappling ledges” thing was totally unnecessary because it forced the developers to make some stupid changes, the location of the first Ultra Health being an example, but well, I could get along with that. Then I go with the River of Souls… short summary: the objectives were relocated so you couldn’t accidentally skip them, destroying the essence of the game. The original version had that added bonus of exploration that it made the game what it was, and now the level was almost lineal, GREAT (SARCASM). As you can see I still remember perfectly the distribution of PoA an RoS and while the changes where overall positive in the first one. I stop playing, go to the forums and… surprise! The same thing happened to the Lair of the Blind Ones!!! And hilariously there’s and achievement for that level, what a joke…

I’ve seen somebody in another review complaining about the same things, and the answer from another steam user was that all those things were foretold (because the developers thought that some zones had unnecessary maze-like structures), so I’ve got to recognize it: MY BAD, I didn’t mind to get enough information on the product I was buying. But then it is not a remastered version of Turok 2, it is a modification with improved graphics and performance. You can’t imagine how sorry I am to have to make this negative review (the only one I ever made in Steam), I suppose I was too hyped and my intention is not to hate, but I'll have to ask for a refund.

PS: I still recommend this game as it’s the best port you’ll find, particularly if you like 20 year old videogames and FPS, and never played it before, or even if you played it but don’t remember it as well as me (most of the players haven’t minded the changes or simply haven’t noticed them).

PSS: Again sorry for my english if I haven’t explained something well enough.
