Story/lore
Signalis is a game that makes you explore the back story of the characters and the universe throughout the whole game. Don't expect information to be handed to you on a silver platter.

Not knowing what is really happening is a really nice touch for when you play the game for the first time, or even the second time... I am very late to the party, but if you lookup the story explanation on youtube or any other platform, you can see that plenty of people talk/ed about it.

One of the things that makes this game really good, is how it conveys meaning to empty words that you get introduced to in the beginning.
Not only it makes you think about how the people of the nation are being fed information through propaganda, but also how the people perceive it in the end.

I fell in love with the lore right when I finished my first playthrough. There are several endings that you can achieve by playing differently, which makes it more fun to just try and think about how you could play to make it to the other ending.

Gameplay
For starters; it tells you information in the form of documents. If you care about the survival-horror game play only, then I'd advise you to reconsider your choice of a title to play. The information is the key to this game making sense.

It's safe to say that I don't play many survival-horror games, since I am not a fan of horror (games).

One thing about the look of this game, which surprised me, is the use of 3D models that are converted to 2D look through pixelation of the environment in the isometric view.
I suppose it makes sense to do this, since you have to animate the 3D model instead of animating pixels. (don't quote me on this since I don't really know anything about this) The transition between the isometric and first-person PoV is smooth, it's not interrupting to the flow.

Afterword
I'd say this game deserved all it's praise. As an indie game, it's peak and I'd buy it again. (In fact I did buy it on Switch...)

Note: I am very late to the party, but in my defence, I got pulled into this game by the artworks :>

NO-SPOILER review:
This game takes the scenario of waking up with amnesia, not knowing a word from the vocabulary and makes you go through with it. It's an interesting concept, but I do wish I knew about some things before I started the game.

The game takes in consideration Engish words in making the vocabulary, so no funny shenanigans witch would make the game harder. To be honest, I got as far as deciphering half of the words before giving up, because I couldn't really tell if they were right or not. Played through one of the endings and tried again.

If you take in consideration the basic mechanic the game plays with; finding words and putting them in context, you are left with really fun puzzle game that makes you think about your choices, since it's always your choice how to interpret the words.

To be honest, I do regret that I can't play this game again, because once you get how the language works, you can't forget it.

Either way, get this game if you enjoy mysteries and playing detective. The story (I'm not going to put any spoilers here) is really good and it made me want to explore more, when I got around the word system.

Spoiler: I know some things are factually wrong, but I don't want to say any spoiler-ish things, meaning also saying that the game takes the mechanic of using Cesar-cipher to get the words right :)

The best story adventure game on the market as of right now. Tape 2 might be a total flop, but we will see.

I've seen a lot of reviews complaining about "slow pace" and "too many cutscenes," but the truth is that you are playing a game that is basically played as a movie, you are meant to enjoy it, savor it while it lasts and afterwards, replay it so you get all the hidden messages and easter eggs.

If you are not enjoying it, then it's not a game for you.

The camcorder could be a little discouraging to use, since you are basically forced to tape everything you see. Once you put yourself in the shoes of a movie-loving, 16 year old girl who got her first camcorder not too long ago, you will see the beauty in it.

The artistic freedom the game offers either with making memoirs or going into the photo mode to make your own collage, is really nice to have in a game like this.

Main menu is changing ever so slightly as you progress the game, like any other life is strange game. I know there are plenty of "lofi games" where you can idle by just pressing play, but here, you can idle by not playing the game.

Listening to "Dreamers" on repeat is just so calming and the ambience is putting it all together to make up an amazing experience before you even begin.

The optimalisation is realy bad, with even a decent rig I got very hard FPS (fishes per second) drops, sometimes, I couldn't catch more than 15 of them!
On a serious note: if you have a potato PC, then I would get the game on a console or wait for some patches to fix the game. Its worth the wait.

Sometimes, the choices are not as straightforward as they seem. Swann, as I mentioned, is 16, so obviously she is awkward in some situations. When I was 16, I also oftentimes found myself in situations, when I said something and it backfired because it didn't sound as good, as it did in my head, said out loud.
I think it's the most realistic part from the whole game, which is kept down to the ground for most part of the tape 1.

I might add something little to this review after Tape 2 drops, but until then, farewell.

On a side note:
Don't Nod proved with Lost Records: Bloom & Rage that Life is Strange went to sh* after Deck Nine took over.

No spoilers: Visuals are nice, love the vibe AND MUSIC, music of LiS is really my favourite aspect of all the games, especially chloe moriondo with her "September". I liked how they "fished" out the plot from the first game, but unfortunately i have one main negative; it's disappointing.

I really did want to enjoy the game, but my mistake was that I hyped it up and actually got the ultimate version, but even the "DLCs" were nothing you should care about.

The writing didn't make sense at times, and I feel like reading a fanfic could do more justice to the series than this "game".

I'm so sorry for this slander. It seems like deck nine and SE couldn't afford a sequel that flopped and didnt sell, so they just did what anyone else does and paid the critics to give them a good score... a good score that isn't deserved.

I am also really tired as of the time I wrote this, but it just wouldn't let me sleep. 9 years of waiting for a sequel that has no remarkable cast of characters, no memorable moments and most of all: no choices. Sometimes, you didn't even know what you were choosing. Real snoozefest.

To be honest, I really needed to get this off my chest but I just wish I had written about something else because this has wasted enough of my time. Maybe I'll change my opinion with time.. we will see.
