Baldwin IV, also known as the Leper King, was born in 1161 and died in 1185. He ruled Jerusalem from 1174 until his death. Despite a disfiguring leprosy disease that prevented him from having an heir, he managed to maintain the integrity of the kingdom for over ten years.

He was crowned king on July 15, 1174 at the age of 14, succeeding his father Amaury I of Jerusalem.

His regents, the noble Miles de Plancy and then Raymond III of Tripoli, exercised real power until 1177.

Baudouin IV triumphed at the Battle of Montgisard in 1177, where his army, though outnumbered, won a decisive victory over the Ayyubid sultan Saladin.
