Early Access Review
I really want to like this game, but it's not letting me. I think a lot of the ways in which it's not letting me like it are probably bugs, or caused by the fact that it is an early access game, but at this point it just feels unplayable unless you cheat, and even then it eventually becomes unplayable.

The colonists are constantly fighting, becoming enemies, killing each other, becoming cannibals, etcetera, in an endless loop. I tried to overcome this by keeping them happy, but it does not help - eventually something will set one of them off and the spiral begins. I then tried to overcome this by only picking colonists with traits like Tolerant, Charismatic, and even Pacifist - I had to cheat to do this, as those cost a lot of DNA - but that didn't help either. The murder sprees seem inevitable, and once they start they do not stop.

When pawns attack each other, none of the others interfere. When one of the pawns is knocked out on the floor, bleeding to death, you cannot help them. Nobody will. The only command you can give the other pawns is to finish them off. There are medkits in the game - you start with some - but no doctor job that I can find.

If that were not enough, the oxygen system seems bugged for me. I keep vents between all the rooms, and plenty of oxygen creation, but sometimes, a room seems to simply decide to be oxygenless, and nothing short of building an oxygen creator in that exact room will fix it. Until then, pawns will happily walk through it, suffocate, and die; there is no way to build the oxygen creator without them having to be in the room, and no way to tell them to please, for your own sake, wear a spacesuit.

Sometimes monsters appear outside your space station. Aside from turrets - which are a fairly advanced tech - I can't find any weapons, so the only option you have is to make your pawns punch them to death, or to lock the airlocks, locking you out of all mining. If you do that, the monsters accumulate until there is a veritable army right outside the airlocks.. Sure, you can kill them by jumping to a new star system, but that's a temporary fix, and you lose access to the previous system forever.

Speaking of jumping between systems, sometimes the star map will bug out and become utterly empty. This is not the biggest deal normally, since you can jump to a new system, but I have had it happen in a game where I had not yet unlocked jumping, so I was stuck.

Researching tech is very fast. So fast that I never know what to do with the new technology. Even if you have infinite cash - as I had, at some point, after I decided to see if cheating would help - your colonists can not build quickly enough to make use of all the new things you discover. If you don't have infinite cash, you won't even be able to afford them. At some point I had the technology to create everything I ever needed, but my colonists had been trying to build a room for the last ten days, and I didn't even have the money to furnish it.

As I said, I really want to like this game. I tried for a long time. I kept quitting out of frustration and opening it up again a bit later because I love the building, I love the characters and the art, and I can tell I would love the game so much if it would just... not, you know? But unfortunately. Unfortunately it is not to be, yet.

I will come back to it later, hopefully.

This is such an amazing game, oh my god. It's absolutely gorgeous, the music is great, the writing is great, the entire atmosphere fits perfectly. The gameplay is terribly smooth and the combat system is intuitive yet complex enough to allow for actual tactics, and I can even kill bosses without taking a single hit now and then if I time things right.

Ringing endorsement.
