needs quest sharing and a better PvP war system, but this may be the best walking simulator since minecraft

this game was absolutely not ready to launch even after the delays but is probably the most fun game i've played that has launched in 2020. if you despise bugs or spend a lot of time in r/gaming, avoid this game, but if you can handle a few mostly funny gripes and bugs, go for it and you'll get a rewarding experience from it.

they intentionally raised the game price and DLC price through the roof when the sims 4 came out on steam and refuse to put it back on sale, not to mention the other 1000+ items locked behind a simpoints paywall. it would cost £350 alone to get the game and DLC and probably another £1000 to get the simpoint items, so i just cannot recommend this game to any new players

unless you know the special websites to get the simpoint items

update: they've cancelled the DLC and very nicely implied they're cutting all support for the future of the game. guess making one DLC for AOE3 in a sea of 20 for AOE2 was too much work for the studio. the community will never forget this betrayal

this used to be a negative review, but with the amount of care and love they've poured into this game after release, i think it's worth an updated review for my favourite RTS of all time. i want to amend all my critiques of the game i listed when this game first came out by dissecting the original review, so i will highlight my new comments:

don't get me wrong, i absolutely loved the original AOE3, one of my earliest PC gaming memories was begging for the asian dynasties DLC when i was 8 years old, but this remaster seems to do more things wrong than right and tarnishes some of my memories of the original

pros:

-new factions are interesting [especially now that there's 3 (soon to be 4) new DLC packs, adding a total of 8 new factions not in the original game]
-graphics are a nice upgrade [somehow even better with photo mode added]
-integration with xbox live is pretty nice
-price is cheaper than the original
-having all cards from the beginning for multiplayer [can see as to why hardcore players hate this]
-some historical accuracy changes are cool, such as the updating of flags and name changes to things such as a plantation, the sioux and iroquois, even if it is kind of lazily implemented in some areas

cons:

-campaign is totally broken, don't expect to be able to complete it without using some cheats as cutscenes freeze, units will get stuck in terrain making them unusable and some mission objectives don't actually work, forcing you to advance to the next level using commands [very rarely get these issues now]
-too many crashes when doing basic things in skirmish, such as using samurai to attack arsenals which has crashed me 3 times [happy to report you can use your samurai to destroy as many arsenals as you want!]
-having all cards unlocked makes single-player pointless, as you have no end goal and no budget decks to use, good for multiplayer as i stated earlier since it eliminates grinding and allows you to be more strategic with friends, but makes single-player skirmishes pretty one-sided
-changing the names of the first two ages, this change is so stupid to me as they're trying to erase an age of colonialism in a game about colonialism
-straight up changing the warchief abilities for the native american factions, alongside changing their method of collecting coin, i understand they want to promote historical accuracy, but this changes the actual gameplay of the game which i dislike quite a lot
-the graphics are nice as described earlier, but they're way too blurry and this is apparent in cutscenes or if you zoom really close in, not the 4k graphics we were promised
-the total rearrangement of the UI was completely unneeded and the fact we can't revert it to exactly as it was in the original AOE3 adds further insult to injury [should still be an option to rearrange but it's much, much better in hindsight]

overall, i still love this game regardless of how unfaithful to the original and buggy of a remaster this is, but i'd really wait until the bugs and glitches are ironed out a bit more before you purchase it, i really hoped i could give this the most glowing review possible but until some major changes are made, i just can't recommend anyone buy this in its current state. some good updates have made the game more stable but most of the listed issues still persist, such as units being stuck in buildings and general multiplayer instability
