Early Access Review
The beginnings of an enjoyable survival MMO, the game is in Early access but I can see the intended direction.

Dev team seem responsive to player feedback and have laid out some plans for a rough roadmap.

I'm happy to join the early access and ride the bumps and see if the game turns into something great.

If your looking for a fully complete MMO experience, this isn't it, play WoW or FFXIV for another year and then come back when EA is over.

Supported since kickstarter, played alpha, beta and launch.

Whilst still a ways off from the full vision of what we kickstarted, DU does do some things tremendously well;

  • the first time you build a ship capable of breaking atmosphere and flying out into space only to realise you didn't make any space brakes.. (real world physics for gravity, lift, thrust etc)
  • customising your ship with the voxel editor and making something slightly less cubular than a bog standard cube (the voxel system is crazily in depth but takes time to learn and master).
  • writing a lua script for a door so it only opens when you or your friends walk near it (fully customisable screens, doors, buttons, engines and more through LUA scripting).

As a sandbox, it does what it says on the tin in spades.

You can claim territory, build whatever you like on land or in space, build ships, fight in pvp or pve, customise your creations to a degree no other game can offer, on a single server where every player is playing with every other player.

There is also alien cores to claim and fight over other players in a king of the hill style ownership which means you can collect plasma a very rare resource.

I'll caveat and say the PvP isn't as great as it could be, it's target lock and fire, and it needs some more nuance built into it to be abit more engaging but you can blow up other ships in deep space and steal from them.

If you like sandbox, endless creativity and customisation, DU might scratch an itch, if you want guided quests and npc's it probably won't, also you can try it for free.

Edit: March 2024, I still play DU, I just use their launcher instead of steam.

If you like zombies, isometric cameras, little to no explanation as to whats going on and a ♥♥♥♥ tonne of pointless mechanics, this little bundle of first year university side project is for you. With absolutely zero compelling factors this has to be one of the most pointless purchases I've ever made.

I recommend you don't buy this game, because it's a bag of wank.
