I've never been fond of the ocean or the idea of going underwater, but I've always wondered whats down there, surrounded by our oceans and yet we know more about the surface of the moon than our own oceans. Even though I can't swim irl; I'm not necessarily afraid of the ocean either.

Subnautica,
A game based entirely underwater released as a early access on December 2014 and looked to be one of those crafting survival games made to waste your time with a never ending; gather items, build stuff, repeat system. and yeah; Subnautica was that, even though I hate the crafting survival genre I still bought Subnautica early access. During it's initial early access release a lot of "Youtuber" were playing the game and I watched quite a few of them, seeing that the game was just a crafting survival game I lose interest in the game and stopped playing it. But oh boy I was not expecting what Subnautica would become in a few years time.

Subnautica finally a full-release title released on January 23, 2018.
Though being the piece of kek I am, I had already been up-to-date with everything new to Subnautica and already knew how it's story was going to play out but that didn't stop me from getting my feet wet; and diving into this I'd say "Masterpiece" of a game.

Being set entirely underwater was a change from the normal type of crafting survival most games have now days and made it unique, let alone a alien planet; the planet of 4546B.

Upon starting the game you are in the eyes of your character who has just made their way into a life-pod, buckling up and securing their safety harness the life-pod launches; your character proceeds to look up through the glass hatch to see your ship explode, a piece of metal soon falls off one of the walls of your life-pod and begins flying all over the pod before ultimately hitting you directly in the head knocking you out. Later you are awoken but the smell of fire, you quickly remove your safety harness, at this point you the player are given control and are able to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher; after putting out said fire you are able to either climb a ladder up or go through the hatch below, upon opening either glass hatch you are met with the ocean surface of planet 4546B, later you learn that your ship the "Aurora" was struck by a mysterious energy pulse, resulting in catastrophic hull failure, leading to its crash landing on the surface of the planet.

I don't want to ruin the rest from here so I'll just give you my thoughts.

Gameplay

Being a crafting survival, you still have the basics like, food bar, water bar, hp, limited carry space stuff like that but being a game based entirely underwater you now have a Oxygen bar; and let me tell you it's not all that bad. The food and water bar are basically there for the survival part of the game; the two were never a annoyance throughout my playthrough of the game because of how slow they would actually drain, which is a good thing. The constant need to eat and drink would have made the game very tedious.

Oxygen

The Oxygen is a double edged sword, on one hand what would a underwater game be without the constant need of Oxygen; and on the other the constant need for oxygen can become annoying at best. But the way the game handles oxygen fixes that problem, throughout your playthrough you will be able to build multiple different pieces of equipment which were all designed to help with your oxygen needs as well as building submersibles and bases which allow you to regain oxygen in seconds.

The gathering items part

Right, the whole gathering resources part of games was never something I enjoyed; but Subnautica makes it fun in a way.
Although tedious being a game underwater; you have the ability to swim up and down, left to right, in a slight angle whatever way you want, and seeing that gathering resources is a strong part of what makes Subnautica what it is; who says you can't just get your Ipad or Phone out and have a video play in the background, or play some of your mad beats for when you harvest a rock with a knife, makes sense right? What I'm trying to say is that it's the same as any other game, just hell of a lot better then most.

The Music

The music is bloody awesome, from the soft melody of the safe shallows, to the deep scary chants for when you explore deeper below to ultimately exploring too deep, to discover something waiting for you.
Although short, I seem to find myself listening to the Subnautica Soundtrack when I'm working on other projects and hey, theres some mad beats in the Subnautica Soundtrack.

just a few examples for a few scenarios.
  • Safe Shallows: Tropical Eden
  • Deeper below: Ghost Tree
  • Exploring too deep: Dark Matter Reactor
  • Mad beats: Cuddlefish OST

Sound design

Let me get this out of the way, I am not a sound designer in any way. But with my limited knowledge I can say that Subnautica has some good sound design. Coupled with it's amazing OST it really makes for a very foreign, strange, unreal experience. The gentle chirping of sea life in the safe shallows leave you with a sense of wonder, the sound of your submersible when exploring the deep silent waters leaving you with a sense of the unknown and curiosity to the echoing screams and roars of sea monsters lurking in the deep dark oceans leaving you in a sense of fear and tension.

Final closing thoughts

Overall, I've fallen in love with this game; it to me is the best example of early access done right, although slow Subnautica to me is one of best games I've played all year and holds it's own in my top 5 favourite games of all time. Although I've already played the game two times I can't get enough of it seeing that I've started my third playthrough. Theres something special about Subnautica that I can't put my finger on.. but hell theres always the upcoming DLC expansion "Below Zero" to look forward too. so as always YOUSORO!

Where do I begin with this game?

A Hat in Time has single handedly jumped its way to my top 5 favourite games of all time.
1. PAYDAY 2
2. Halo 2
3. Team Fortress 2
4. A Hat in Time
5. Dishonored
From its cute graphics to its fun gameplay I enjoyed my time playing through Hat in Time,
I had bought this game just because a friend had recently played it and recommended it to me, I didn't see much of it besides its cute graphics.
though I had the money to spend so I got it, and i'm glad I got it full price because it deserves it.

It was such a nice breath of fresh air from all the classic genres I've played during the past year that all can be summed up in three words. "FPS" "War" "Violence"
I highly recommend A Hat in Time if you are looking for a break away from the classic genres you are so use to and just wanna experience something new.
