Absolutely ridiculous that Nine Souls did not win Outstanding Visual Style for the 2024 Steam Awards. At least RedCandleGames got 1 nomination for 2024 over here on Steam...
Snubbed not long ago at The Game Awards 2024 with zero nominations, and now this too.

I needed to add a positive review to help out the Steam discovery algorithm somehow!

Just out of the gate: Nine Sols stands above even Hollow Knight as a contender in the genre, there is zero doubt. The bar Silksong needs to clear got a whole lot higher!!

Listen, I don't usually leave Steam reviews.
Nine Sols should have been nominated for not only that category above - but Best Game on Steam Deck, Outstanding Story-Rich Game, hell even 2024 Game of the Year.
Of course it wouldn't win every single one, but it is EASILY competitive in every one!

Just some highlights -

Gameplay, 9/10:
Takes unlocking a good few Jades along with slots to swap around. But then the game just began to click and the fluidity is incredible.
Could easily be 10/10 if that could be shown out of the gate faster. Maybe that's just the nature of the Metroidvania genre though.

Story, 8/10:
Personally, I haven't finished the story 100% as of review, but with 4/9 Sols and currently at the boss for #5, the story pieces are lining up at this point. Strong themes come through the conversations Yi has with different NPCs as well as major bosses.

Absolutely cannot get enough the Yin/Yang dichotomy unfolding alongside the technology/spirituality dynamic.
Do yourself a favor and don't look up any spoilers past maybe the first 30 minutes of this game.
RedCandleGames comes out swinging and continues to build and build as the story unfolds.

Visuals, 10/10:
Impossible to emphasize it enough - there's just so so much to love in every zone & scene of the game.
90% of the bestiary oozes style that not only looks fantastic but also helps the player recognize and mentally prepare for the variety of move sets the different monsters have.

Steam Deck, 8/10:
Runs flawlessly, only minor gripe is the resolution didn't default/lock to my native SD resolution. After briefly fiddling with the visual options it wasn't a problem and the game easily maintains a consistent 60 FPS on Steam Deck. Would Recommend.
