I keep wanting to like this game, but the earlygame is an intolerable grind of not having enough money for anything that having access to any space on the map - even with the gamerules for 50% more taxes and the minimum maintenance cost for territory - feels like a dream.

how am I supposed to have pretty wheat fields and secluded monasteries when the game wants me to feel so insanely claustrophobic at every moment?
I tried using the unlock all territory gamerule, but that just led to me having every single building unlocked from the start because of the amount of prosperity I started with.

the incredibly grindy earlygame combined with horrible optimisation makes this game something to avoid unless things are changed.

This review was made after completing the game and playing on the hardest difficulty during the latter half, when the devs added the new difficulty options.

Space Crew, on the surface, looks and feels a whole lot like Bomber Crew, but the gears that keep the game's mechanics interacting with each other just don't work right. In Bomber Crew, incredibly important systems for your plane go down frequently, and without very quick repair, you can be in massive trouble. In Space Crew, maybe like once every 5 missions your o2 gen will go down and you can send your engineer to repair it in 30 seconds while you have absolutely 0 penalties while it's down.

Space Crew's combat misses where Bomber Crew's doesn't, with the aspect of having to maintain your ship and crew's health still there, but completely neutered because basically nothing can hurt you. incredibly large amounts of fire heading towards you? just use evasive manoeuvring and become un-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥-touchable for like 30 seconds. after that, just use shield overdrive and your shields become literally unbreakable. after that? you still have shield replenish which puts even completely depleted shields at 100% after 5 seconds and after THAT you have stealth mode which gives you 40 seconds of complete invisibility to enemies (although you can't fire at them, but that's barely a downside)

Even the hacker ships, which threaten your core systems, are even less of a threat than other ships, because they don't even have guns. They just stroll up to you, decided to start hurting your o2 gen, your shield recharger, or your gravity gen, and then after like 20 seconds if that ship isn't dead the system will break down. none of these breaking down is at all a threat. all of my crew had gravity boots by early midgame because it was nicer to just be able to have an extra power pip for weapons/shields, so I never even had the gravity generator on, which mean if the hacker ship went for the gravity gen, it was literally completely a non-existent threat. compare to Bomber Crew, where having your hydraulics go out means you can't use your landing gear or use your guns because the turrets can't rotate. or where your power going out means no radar.

It's such a big shame because the mechanics for more precise threats to your ship are there, but they never actually cause the harm. there's an alien ship that boards you, but literally all I had to do every time was open the airlock and watch as all the boarders flew into space and died. the only time my ship ever had fires was when I overloaded my weapons, at which point all I had to do was, again, open the airlock and watch it die with 0 issues. Even radiation and your crew getting shot aren't threats, because they're nigh on invincible and radiation damage just regens after some time, so you can rad your whole ship and have your crew take maybe 10% damage which regens.

All in all, I completed Space Crew with one dead crew member, and not one lost ship. the one crewmate died because he decided to get out of his seat during a boarding when I opened the airlock, and sadly, that was the most interesting point in the whole game, and it was in the early game. at the halfway point, entire swarms of enemy ships were such little threat that I got more annoyed at the low DPS output of my weapons than I had fun, because I didn't have to make any choices or have to micromanage my crew as 3 deadly things go wrong at the same time like in Bomber Crew.

If the devs are able to fix these issues, then this would totally be a recommendation, but as it stands, too much of the game is something you just watch because it's kinda pretty.
