Final Fantasy, Ys, and Dragalia Lost were thrown into a blender, seasoned with Monster Hunter, and set to cook for eight years. The result is something nothing short of fantastic. Cygames has cooked INCREDIBLY hard.

I havent played ff15 in a few years but I remember it very well, it was a game I was super hyped for back when it was called Vs. 13 and I remember its initial re-reveal as FFXV in 2013 absolutely blew me away. I expected an incredible adventure and when the game finally was revealed the following year and it wasnt anything like the trailer, I was worried. The main problem this game has is all entirely square enix's fault.

They ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up marketing and developing the game, leveraging Tetsuya nomura to work on Kingdom Hearts 3 instead of FFXV, so even though he had worked on the designs and gameplay philosophies up until its release, he was shuttered off the project because it was costing a lot of money and they needed someone to finish the game. Enter Hajime Tabata, famed designer of.. The Third Birthday.. and.... Final fantasy Type-0. One of the first big changes he brought in was to combat. It was altered to be a hold circle to do attack system instead of a real time action, press button response happens. This meant you could hold circle and the game would play itself. Noctis was the only character you could control, out of a party of 4, and the AI control on party members wasnt great.

Your party members are 4 boyband twinks. You have Gladio, a Bara Greatsword dude, Prompto, the twink, Ignis, the pretty boy chef, and Noctis, the fisher and crown prince. Thats it. You temporarily get Aranea Highwind, a dragoon who was supposed to have her own DLC that was cut, Prompto's big brother who was also cut, Cor, who was mentioned in the Prequel movie Kingsglaive

wait.. prequel movie? thats right. The entire start of the game, which has noctis leave the country to go find his childgood friend Stella, is shown as a flashback.. in a movie.. not included in game...?????????????????????? Very cool.

Lets not forget they created an anime prequel focusing on the main characters, which went nowhere. They also made mobile games. remakes. demakes. etc, cell phone games, media crossovers, etc. its garbage. they ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard.

Magic was relegated to a grenade type reagent system where you built your own bombs of elemental magic and used them as temporary resources. They looked cool but they were primarily used to increase Gil and EXP given. This, combined with the all too fleshed out cooking and ingredients sytstem, showed how ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid their mismatched priorities were. The party, which consists of only 4 dudes, lives in a modern day fantasy world where they drive a magic oldsmobile, eat cup noodles, and camp out at designated magic campsites IN COLEMAN TENTS. WHAT THE ♥♥♥♥? the product placement is just the beginning.

The game was unfinished at launch. You could play the entire game, which is a generic open world, for about 20 hours, and then the remaining 7 hours of the game are a hallway that can only be described as "what if we copied metal gear solid but didnt make it good". they slapped a linear open world stealth section into a massive open world game, and decided to use it as a crux to backload all the storytelling into the final act and make you go ???????? instead of being like ohhhh that makes sense, cuz they made zero effort to flesh out the characters prior to this point. I should also mention that theres a timeskip of not one, not two, not three, but ten years. You spend 10 years in a crystal hanging out with Bahamut and then your friends, who arent in the crystal, are fighitng monsters in the darkness, 10 years in the future. The timeskip, set entirely at nighttime, is unexplorable. all you do is walk into the capital, insomnia, and finish the game. No exploration, no open world, nothing.

I glossed over the main battles vs the auspices of the world, a very ♥♥♥♥♥♥ fight with titan, an even worse fight with leviathan, and a final battle with Ifrit, whos the games antagonist. Theres a love story here. but it ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sucks.

ill be honest the best part of this game is the story and comraderie amongst the bros. They really attempted and succeded to flesh out these guys and when tragic moments in the story happen to them, they actually feel sad. th ending of the game is alos really good and sad, but also hopeful in a weird way. It was supposed to be fixed with DLC, but the DLC was cancelled after the higher ups decided that luminous needed to be its own game and it didnt need more ff15 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in it, so Hajime Tabata was fired from square and the promised end of the game was cancelled.

Lmao.

4/10 its mediocre.
