The game checkerboard renders almost everything, causing elements to appear at half, or even quarter resolution. In spite of this, the game still relies on upscalers and frame generation to get remotely acceptable performance. This makes the game look insanely awful. 2160p looks like sub 540p.

Unfortunately, even though the game looks this bad (like a ps3 game,) it also runs terribly. On the best hardware you can get, if you want to average 60fps, you need to dip the target resolution below 2160p; it is hardly stable at 1620p. If you buckle and attempt to turn on frame gen, half the time it will display generated frames out of order, and the other half the game will miraculously drop to 2 fps. On the slim chance frame gen actually works, the game fails to mask out UI elements correctly, causing any camera motion to smear them all over the screen. Another issue with frame gen is that is causes texture streaming to become bugged and repeatedly reload the textures, making the game look like playdoh.

This is the worst of all worlds. This is unacceptable.
At least it runs slightly better than the beta?

Beware ignorant players claiming that the game runs fine. These are people with high spec hardware running the game at 1080p with upscalers set to ultra performance, and generally with frame gen on. That's 360p.

The game could be good, but this presentation is unacceptable, and generally makes it unplayable.

Also the existence of 'character edit vouchers' is ludicrous in a full priced game. Insanity.

Needs a lot of work, I cannot suggest this at it's current price. In my playthrough, I got to level 54, most of the achievements, was just before the final boss.
Combat does not flow very well currently:
- If you have good luck and end up with adequate stats, you will one-hit everything; the most extreme example of this that I have is on a run where I three-hit the first boss
- Otherwise, you will either playing a tedious game of cat & mouse, or taking needless damage
The primary source of this issue I believe is twofold:
- The block/parry/riposte system takes a lot of stamina. With large packs of mobs, this makes it impossible to engage enemies without taking damage due to having your stamina sapped constantly; you are forced to joust. This is part of your fundamental kit, and you are in most cases punished for using it.
- The vast majority of enemies lack any meaningful mechanics. There are a couple exceptions later in the game, but for the most part they are entirely dull. Additionally, most player mechanics are locked behind boons and class passives, of which most do not conjugate well, and many have massive value discrepancies.

Also, the axe requires insane attack speed investment to be worth using over the other three weapons. I think the swing should be cancelable into block

The game is also very buggy at the moment, the following are some issues I encountered:
- being flung out of the map (this happened multiple times, possibly related to dashing in the air?)
- collectibles and gates spawning outside the walkable map
- dash sometimes does not move the player (maybe related to grounded state)
- weapons getting stuck in the block animation, the player can receive damage though
- casters hands have a solar flare that is tweaking out sometimes
- casters spells can visibly go in the wrong direction, and still invoke damage, additionally, shooting through walls (I think these are related to AOE)
- upgrading a weapon to legendary does not unlock the achievement
- ability targeting will often target the wrong enemy

I think this will be pretty good in the future with some polish and more content!

You can uncap the framerate and animation rates by editing your save file with UESaveEditor.
The game is a short, fun little kingsfield like. There are a lot of weapons and spells to find.

Only a bit past halfway through the game at time of review

- combat is fun for a turn based jrpg
- art style is highly unique
- music is good enough
- story is pretty standard jrpg nonsense, feels a lot like ff6 and ff7

You can tell a lot of passion went into this game, though it could have used a lot more polish.
For example, the art style digitizes real world sets (made out of stuff like clay, cardboard, plastics, etc.), though the photos are too low resolution (and grainy!) for modern displays, and the masking for depth is done in 3D, which results in a lot of poor results. I think this is a good prototype for this genuinely cool style, but if we see anything like it in the future, it needs more effort to look wholly correct

If you can get past the minor visual artifacts, and low quality 3D assets, this is a good game.

A crazy amount of minor content. Some are quests, some are POIs.
Movement is fun. Combat could be better. Exploration could be better, could be worse. The overworld is a bit clever, gives opportunity for random events and other interesting things, but feels kinda lame.
Can't wait to see more.

Ignoring the memes, this is an excellent collectathon puzzle platformer sandbox third person shooter.
When you don't suspect it will get better, it just keeps getting better.
Surprising number of vocal music tracks.

Be weary that the game does nothing to hold your hand when it comes to solving problems and puzzles, which in my opinion is mostly a good thing.

you are a humanoid monkey-kind with a big stick, and the tl;dr of the mission is to bonk the bad guys and dance around their attacks

PSN login is now a prerequisite to play. While this is not much of an issue, and most gamers will have or be able to set up a PSN account, the fact that this can possibly limit gameplay for no benefit is concerning. We have seen for months that the game works perfectly without PSN login, so adding it after the fact when the game already uses Steam to authenticate benefits nobody, and only serves to harm the player.
Arrowhead's team and community manager have responded in bad faith to criticism over this, which speaks volumes about their view on the playerbase, and desire for the game to have longevity.
