This is an experiment in gaming taken to a level I never thought possible. After playing video games for over 15 years I can confidently say no other game like this exists.

I hope every human plays this at some point in their lives.

Most people will say "It's Terraria in space", and those people will be right, to an extent. Starbound is the spiritual successor, in a different way. Terraria focused more on combat, and a "small" set map to which you were restricted to. Starbound, on the other hand, focuses more on adventure, discovery. The feeling you have when playing Starbound is EXTREMELY immersive. It doesn't feel like I'm playing a sandbox game, it feels like I'm venturing off to different corners of the universe.

TL;DR It's better than Terraria, because it does many things well that Terraria doesn't, like exploration
