When you design a game you design an experience for your players, and what an incredible experience Cultist Simulator is...

Yet, this is not an experience for everyone. If you don't have the time or patience to fail and start over with newfound knowledge, perhaps this is not for you. The game will give you the information you need to succeed, but it will not guide you to it. It needs your attention, patience, and a perhaps more than healthy amount of curiosity. If this game has piqued your interest, you enjoy puzzles or riddles, and have some time to kill, I would HIGHLY recommend Cultist Simulator.

While I would recommend going totally blind into this game and learning as you go, here are a few tips/tricks that you may find helpful.
  1. Organization is CRITICAL, later on in the game there are a lot of things to keep track of unless you enjoy spending half the game looking for where you put that damn card. I would recommend separating cards into groups: people, places, things, stats, etc. Setting card snapping to 1/2 card lets you layer cards on others to save some space, or use half card gaps to break up groups of cards while still saving space. Find a system that works for you and stick to it.

  2. Organization applies to the Verb tiles too. There are a lot of timers counting at once in Cultist Sim and I find it helpful to group verbs near the center so I don't forget about them if I focus somewhere else. Also if a verb generates another verb, it will try to find the nearest open space to place the new verb so leave some space for them in case they would get pushed off-screen.

  3. Take notes! Mostly for times sake, I didn't and wasted a fair bit of time looking for the right card quite a few times.

  4. If you aren't sure what you even can do, clicking a space for a card in a verb will highlight valid cards. Keep in mind this sometimes highlights cards that can't go in first, but can go in with another card before it.

  5. That blue long bracket thing is where new cards get dropped, you can move it around like everything else. Because the game won't stack cards on each other, the area around this can get somewhat cluttered. You may want to move it off to a side and give it space, just make sure you keep an eye on it.

  6. You can pause the game at any time, you might notice this game has quite a lot of text. Some descriptive, some flavorful, and some VERY informative. Take your time, pause, and read if you get stuck. You can also go back to previous bits of text, if you skimmed over something for instance, with the arrows at the bottom of a text box.

  7. You can stall the timers on cards that decay by placing them in a verb without starting it. For example if you place glimmer in the study verb, the timer on that glimmer freezes as long as that box is open even if you don't (or can't) start studying it. This is very helpful if you know you need a card but it will decay just before you get the other card(s)

  8. If you want to experience the story but find yourself put off or frustrated by the game or certain mechanics, go to the Discussions page for this game. Near the top is a pinned post from writer and developer Alexis Kennedy which says "READ THIS FIRST" where you may find some helpful info.

Before I talk about my experiences with the game, if you're interested and planning to play this game: stop reading, go play it, avoid looking things up if possible. The experience of learning, exploring, and discovering all the secrets and intricacies of this game is wonderful. Don't spoil your fun, and come back once you've completed a run or two.

At the time of writing I've put 35 hrs into this game, died quite a few times, and completed 2 runs (currently working on NG+). First victory was lantern, second was forge. Personally I love puzzle games, rogue-likes/lites, and have my fair share of time to burn. I absolutely adore this game and it's such a refreshing experience to play a game without relying on outside knowledge after having used wikis for so long.

The game is a bit experimental, as it tells you when you launch it. The UI is admittedly clunky and one of my major gripes with this game. When you place a card into a verb it remembers the spot on the table it sat before, and tries to place it there when it returns the card. Unfortunately this doesn't work when certain cards (vitality, passion, reason) become worn out for a short time after using them, so they go to a different place on the board. It also wont always return stackable cards to an existing stack (ex: dreaming with worn out health, because it remembers the position of the fatigued health)

The other issue is the obnoxious repetition of constantly dragging and dropping the cards into a box. I would kill for the ability to just shift-click or alt-click cards to send them to an open text box. Especially when you can only have one box open at any given time, filling left to right, checking if a card has an attribute that fits in an empty space, seems like it would definitely be possible to do.

The lack of a tutorial is a seriously bold move. And take one peek at all the negative reviews, as well as the score for this game on steam, and you'll see why. People get frustrated at this game because they can't find the info they need. Yet it's all right there, just easy to spot.

The other major issue some people have is the grind. I know for a fact that i'm biased on this topic, years of runescape have made me tolerant to a grind. But when people say that they lost their run 10 hours in, it seems less like a grind and more of getting stuck and not knowing how to succeed. (again because its not explained well)
Id estimate you can complete a victory in under 5 hours depending on your method. (and much faster if you knew exact locations)

Considering all of this, Cultist Simulator is a fantastic game with its share of flaws. Provided you are patient and willing to put in the effort, or thoroughly enjoy puzzle and strategy games, this game provides an experience like no other.

I lost myself in this game for hours, immersed in my occult studies. I felt my power grow as my knowledge grew, digging deeper and exploring further. I learned languages long forgotten, summoned beings of great power. I relished in the Light, the Fire, and the Grail. I stepped into the Mansus, and soon I will enter the Glory.

And I will not grow old...

alright for real, this game is the ♥♥♥♥. rhythym based roguelike caught my attention right away and this game did not fail to deliver. intense gameplay that can all go wrong in a few seconds if you arent paying attention mixed with a killer soundtrack from DannyB, not to mention 2 cover albums that are equally incredible. If youre a fan of either roguelikes or rhythym games, do not miss out on necrodancer.
