Valve wants this game to die...
So timeless, yet so forsaken.

Pros:
Great sound quality and design
Menus are coherent and easy to navigate
Controls great (just don't get to jump happy, when over pitfalls)
Spooky-fun, cartoon graphics that are just really nice to look at
Halloween atmosphere
Variety weapons to run around and smack or shoot monsters with
Simple but fun boss mechanics
Didn't get bored

Cons:
Short (6 levels, each about 45 minutes to an hour, if you take your time)
Left wanting more
Basically no replay value
I was severely let down by the story

I'd had this game on my wishlist for some time; not wanting to buy it after reading other reviews about it being so short a game (and it is). It recently went on sale, for half the $30 price, so I picked it up.

I love the atmosphere so much in this game. The art style and spooky ambiance of each stage is soooo good.
(I love Halloween)
The music though, while a very spooky Halloween feel, mostly seems to run together; each track mostly sounds the same. Good quality and such, but nothing really stuck out... I found myself muting the music and just listening to the awesome (spooky) ambiance of the stages, while smacking skeletons and ghosts with a shovel.

The characters are a lot of fun. The Great Jack himself is an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but you love his attitude anyway. The owl is bossy, but adorably animated, with fun banter between he and Jack. The cowardly crow friend reluctantly following Jack into the next big fight... All just fun to watch and listen to...
My main gripe in regards to these guys is with the actual story itself...

(((((((SPOILERS)))))))
The story follows the Great Jack, a supposedly notorious trickster, so bad to the bone and awesome that he tricked even The Devil himself 3 times before the game takes place. The plot involves Jack (the player) being tasked as a mercenary by The Devil to stop humanity from saving the world that he himself has wrought upon it... That kind of sucks, in my opinion. You are literally working for the greatest evil to doom Earth. I don't really want to do that...

Now I figured, okay even so, I like the spooky atmosphere and want to see what will happen. Jack's a trickster, right? Throughout the game, characters you come across are always recognizing the Great Jack, No.1 Trickster of all time, which had me anticipating our titular character would enact some of this supposed trickery; best The Devil for a 4th time, right? Backstab the greatest evil, stop his world dooming mission, and come out on top like a true dark hero. Maybe, being that Jack is bad himself, he'd end up ruling....
but.... no.
The Great Jack does nothing. You beat humanity's last savior, gain awesome power, and just... do The Devil's bidding, and doom Earth. That like... really sucks.

Conclusion:
Short, bitter-sweet, spooky Halloween adventure; great to look at and to listen to.... I would love to play more, or see the story revamped into something less bad/deadpan. Maybe I'll play it once a year on Halloween (but probably not?)

7/10

Don't base the quality of a game on its fandom.
People must like to play it for a reason, right?

Quite a fun game, with cool tunes and tough bosses.

I really love this game. It's a lot of fun.... but co-op can only be used through remote share, and that absolutely ruins it for someone who lives on an island.

I will not downvote this masterpiece just because of Denuvo. The game itself is amazing and near-flawless, puts you right back in the old school Sonic Gameplay. With great level design, bosses, and throwbacks, I believe the hard-working developers, and all others who put something into this, deserve 2 thumbs up for their apparent love of the franchise.

The greatness of the game outstands the Denuvo controversy, in my opinion.
