Age of Empires II is one of the first games I remember playing on PC when I was a kid. I first played this game nearly 20 years ago, and it has got to be the game that I have been playing consistently over the longest period of time. While I am still absolutely terrible at the game, there is something so great about loading up the campaign or a skirmish match and going to town with your favorite civilization.

The resurgence that the HD edition has generated within the community has been fantastic. YouTubers/Streamers such as Spirit of the Law and T90Official are fantastic examples of the community growing for such an old game. Even with the HD version, the graphics don't hold up (of course) but there are mods that add in new textures to everything. So the biggest thing holding it back from a graphics standpoint is the models for everything.

The new civilizations that have been added have really changed up the meta, old AOE2 Conquerers metas are no longer viable due to patches, or we just get to play a new civ. While the ranked matches in HD edition are not where the main players are (Woobly is where it is at), there is still a bit of fun to be had.

TL;DR If you loved this when it came out, it still has a lot more to give. If you never played it, the HD + Mods for new textures may be enough to get you into one of the best RTS's of all time, and you may have a bit of fun with it.
