Early Access Review
Phasmophobia takes the setting of your typical, generic and dumb ghost hunter "reality" TV series, and turns it into a chilling and unique co-op experience. There's nothing else quite like first spending ten minutes trying to get the ghost to respond in order to gather clues about its nature, but then suddenly ending up running like a madman to some closet in order to desperately hide and try to survive it when the ghost decides to get nasty. The game is excellent at keeping you at your toes all the time, while also inducing a feeling of helplessness that one rarely gets to experience in cooperative games.

There's a lot of jankiness in the game, bringing some unintentional comedy, and it can look rather cheap at times, but the gameplay is unique enough that all the lack of polish is easy to forgive. And although it's not exactly a game that I would play for hundreds of hours as of now, the update cycle has really picked up in 2021 in regards of content and balancing. And hey, it's only barely over 10 euros - even the current amount of content in the game easily justifies its price.

A very well-rounded roguelite with a robust combat system featuring a varied array of weapons, a surprisingly good story (not something you see often in loop-based games) and top-notch sense of aesthetics and soundtrack - not to even mention the dazzling amount of well-written dialogue to spice up runs even after you've dozens of hours in. It's rare to see a game that feels so polished and stylish all the way in, a very strong GOTY contender for 2020.

If I really had to complain about something, the game could use a bit more enemy/boss/room variety, and sometimes the game can feel a bit awkward with its conversation triggers (you know that you fulfill the conditions to access something or advance a quest, but the correct dialogue doesn't necessarily appear immediately, leading to somewhat annoying random delay until you can move forward with it; or characters end up saying dialogue that you probably should have heard 10 hours ago already), but really, that's just nitpicking. The overall experience is so great, that you absolutely should give the game a spin as long as you have even a remote interest in the genre.
