Rogue trader: The Buggy fight for humanity with cheating A.I.

"Haha, what if we just threw like 15 dudes against the player at once. And what if we made it so that the enemy A.I actively cheats every combat encounter. Who gives a ♥♥♥♥ about the rules, ♥♥♥♥ the player."-OwlCat's motto for encounter design.

Some of my favorite highlights.
-Getting sniped, the enemy sniper not moving a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ inch, then the exact same person he sniped is cannot snipe him back. Over a dozen times I've had a situation where some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ A.I literally shoots through walls, cover and deals a buncha damage, doesn't move and then either my MC or Yrlet who was the one shot cannot shoot them back with a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sniper rifle.

-Enemy having basically a 100% chance of hitting at least 2-3 shots from burst fire, but with almost 80 Ranged weapon skill and my party member can't hit one. Okay, cool thanks. High cover? Haha nope go ♥♥♥♥ yourself. More ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ times than i can count i've had an enemy with literally 0 cover burst fire one of my units who are in high cover, hit 2-3 shots, deal a quarter of my units hp then not move. But when I return with a REALLY good weapon skill on an enemy out in the open. "UwU Sowwy, you miss all your shots." Only then to get burst fired by the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ again.

-Parrying just doesn't work. Oh? Did you parry an attack? Take 18 points of damage anyway. I have used the vangards defensive stance, returned the attack because it was a parry and still taken damage more than fifteen times.

-Enemies literally moving into the walls, shooting my units like they don't have cover, then staying in the walls so I have to restart the fight. This one i'm sure is a bug, but it's happens several ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ times, the first ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ chaos marine, ran INTO the fire of the ship he destroyed, gunned down three of my party members in cover with one volly, hitting every single one of his shots, then when I try to return fire FROM ON TOP OF ONE OF THE BODIES. nope, can't target him. He can target me, but haha go ♥♥♥♥ myself i can't target him. He didn't leave the fire and literally not a single angle i got on him with the three remaining members I had could shoot him in the four turns i lived and I had all three of them in very different angles all of which stated he was in sight and I repeatedly moved them to try and get an angle on him. Or my other favorite, I'll be above an enemy, unable to shoot them because of the angle, but they can still shoot me just fine. Lasgun, meltagun, shotgun.

-"Making encounters is hard, lets just put five or six enemies in a room with you having minimal cover and jack their hp to 100+. That's fair right?" Boy, I love having several enemies who just have 100+ hp, that can then rush you down, deal 1/3rd of a units hp while unless you choose to cheese it, you are basically pissing in the wind at them.

Absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ encounter design and whoever designed most of these arena's and populated them unironically needs to be fired as well as anyone who looked at them and passed it off. I'm on normal by the way.

Literally almost every other thing they get right, the visuals are fantastic, the story is well done, the universe is richly designed, but jesus ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ christ, it should not feel like every ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ encounter i'm facing off an A.I that only knows how to cheat and couldn't play fair if it's life was on the line.

So, I wanted to try to like the game. I really did. But the game just doesn't have enough base content.
When you offer a SPACE game. I want it to be set in ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ space. Not on planets, but slightly less populated.
The worlds feel empty and lifeless because they are. The weapons, all like 4 of them are so generic and samey that they blend together, I have raided about 15 outposts and have still yet to find a better weapon than the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ starting ax.

So, weapon variety is about as varied as the flavors of coca cola you can buy.

The planets are literally massive tracks of nothing and there is no point in exploring any planet you don't have a mission on. The exploration aspect is just padding. That's it. I have yet to find a point to it that some other function does not cover. Who needs to go and collect iron when I can just go steal everything in the known universe from some dudes desk and sell everything to buy what I need?

The A.I is laughable at best. I'm playing on the hardest mode and the only thing that makes them remotely hard to deal with is the fact that they are incredibly tanky and just had numbers tweaked up, as is the laziest form of making things more difficult, but that's a Bethesda staple. I literally hid behind a tree and lost agro.

"Classes and skills." Except for the starter perks, All perks are mysteries till you unlock them. Wanna be a pilot like I did and sink a whole buncha points into it? Haha ♥♥♥♥ you, it's worthless. Like, genuinely worthless to invest in anything past the starter pilot skills. On top of that, anything that is basically not shooty bang bang or barbarian, basically doesn't work. Good luck if you wanna try stealth or any not gun / melee focused builds because the game some how has less variety of play than ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ skyrim. Any other play style just doesn't feel good.

Factions: All the factions except like Ryujin Industries suck ass.
I'm aware you can join all of these groups, but somehow that matters even LESS than in fallout 4, which was a big complaint to me. You can choose to side with the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pirate, who I've been slaughtering by the dozens, and in the same breath, also be an equal member of any one of the other groups with literally no penalties. "Oh yeah, that one merc we got is also a pirate, and a member of Constellation, and Free star collective, and Ryujin and the united vanguard. Groups I have personally WATCHED gun one another down for being in that group, minus the constellation as thy are all worthless.

Constellation: All of them are self entitled ♥♥♥♥♥ who like pretending they are better than every other scientist in the galaxy because "They still explore. Whooa maan." Shut the ♥♥♥♥ up and let me kill you all please. I genuinely hate that the main quest is tied to them and is the main reason I still haven't done anything past the neighborhood or whatever mission.

Crimson Fleet: Don't matter. They are pirates. That's it. After 10 hours and like 20+ planets explored that's literally all I know about them.

Free Star Collective: "Like man, what if we were hippies, but corporate." The only way I feel about them is they are a mega corp, but one that just lies constantly to my face and acts like it's not a mega corp.

Ryujin Industries: Yeah, they are evil megacorp ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but at least they are upfront and honest about it. I would genuinely rather side with them, ignore the ENTIRE constellation quest line and finish the game with them as they are the only half decent (Ironic) people who you can at least trust to be mega corp.

United Colonies Vanguard: US military but with somehow less capable funding, equipment, gear, intelligence, quality of soldier. Filed under non a threat and I do not care.

That's it. That's all of the groups. That is every single organization in the game. That's every single group in the game that has some influence on the players actions past generic settlers.

You get one flavor of space pirate to fight as enemies and you get four others to do... stuff with.

No random space pirates nearly 10 hours in. No rogue traders you can sign up with, no random npc's you can try to rob if you wanna be a pirate yourself. No guilds of miners (Despite there being a quest around one) to join. Oh, you can start settlements on any planet though? So, fallout 4's settlement building, but not restricted to a tile of the map.
Coool. Oh wait, I can start of with a player home? That negates the need to ever build a settlement? Alright then.

The game feels soulless and like it was just slap dashed together for how little it has to offer. Once you do the main questline, there is really jack ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ for you to do.

Flying in space feels fun, but it's not like other space sims where you can actually just FLY to your destination, nope. Fast travel only. You can't just take in space around you. So it's a space rpg game where the intent is to roleplay a space traveling bad ass. And the game more or less actively forces you to not engage with space at ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ all unless it's just a quick boring space fight which with the aforementioned AI, is boring as ♥♥♥♥.

So in a space rpg that is set IN SPACE actively encourages you not to explore space, as so far every planet i've been to minus the main citys has been pretty much the exact same place with a different color pallet. "Woah, this planet also has Iron that I can shoot with a laser that if I want to collect this material which I can also just buy with the infinite money I've ♥♥♥♥ out from theft. So why bother at all?"

The game almost hates the fact that space exists and it feels like it actively wants you to stay out of it.
The game's quest lines are hot garbage.
The games companions are utter ♥♥♥♥ without a drop of likable personality.
The freedom to do as you like has been cut in half compared to fallout 4. Don't even get me started on ♥♥♥♥ like Skyrim.
The grand total of FIVE, that's right FIVE groups you can join. IN SPACE. IN THE ENTIRE GALAXY THERE IS FIVE WHOLE GROUPS YOU CAN JOIN.

The weapon variety is somehow WORSE than skyrims. Oh, I get a pistol that functions exactly like every other handgun with zero variety despite it being ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ the year 2330 or whatever it is. For a game set in the far far far far far far far far future.
There is no future tech. Aside from the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ space ships and jump drives. There is very little of this game that says "Space" to me. It's just "Yeah, space exists, but why the ♥♥♥♥ would you want to do anything these? No no no, stay on the ground and just fight another twenty generic pirates so the NPC with no meaningful reason to exist other than to say that this marked bandit fort exists will give you another identical gun to the one you own, or a handful of creds that don't matter because of how paltry the reward is? Take the lives of twenty people? Best I can do is like 200 creds. Get yourself a nice soda. I have still yet to find a single quest that rewards as much or even remotely close to the stuff I can pick up around whatever I was doing and sell. That's not even counting the mountains of guns and ammo I can sell on top of it.
So the only reason that NPC exists, is to tell me about the pirate stronghold or w/e, which is pre marked on my map.

"Aliens": So there are aliens. But the most dangerous or interesting they get is annoyingly walking toward you a just ignore them. As all of the ones I've found are either so wildly below my level it's not even worth the ammo. Or like 5 levels above me and are a massive waste of ammo for like 25 whole exp.

So in short, this is a RPG set in space, by the people who made ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Skyrim with, no good quests, no interesting NPCS, a weapon variety that is put to shame by the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ literal dark ages, the main quest line the NPC's around that are insufferable ♥♥♥♥♥, one flavor of enemy that doesn't just walk at you is so wildly stupid that they pose no threat even on the hardest difficulty.

All, for 100$. Save you're money.

The game has it's issues, I got it as part of a bundle and on the whole, I'd say it's okay. I want to like it as it seems like it should scratch that itch, but then I play it and the enemies are eh at best. None of them really offer anything of interest, which fair it's a bullet heaven.
The bosses are even more lack luster.

The game isn't challenging at all to me as by the times there are large enough waves of enemies to be hard, you've likely scaled to where they don't matter, and the bosses either have one boring or obnoxious thing they spam. (Looking at you shub and your charge in massive ♥♥♥♥ off line that a drunk would struggle to get hit by.

The game is in early access, so maybe they will fix it?
I wish I could give the game a eh rating.

Like, it's fine, but I'd rather just go play Vampire survivors for a more polished experience because it has the better variety with all of the same enemy types.

The positives however make it worth keeping an eye on.
It's got a great sound track, interesting visuals, a good theme and I like the combat and upgrades, I just wish it did more than try to be a Vamprie survivors but Cthulu based

Dev's if you read this some how, following critisim I'd give.

-Make enemies more than stand around an aimlessly wander to you at varying speeds in the slow and boring way, or the fast and boring way.
- Colorblind options. I don't have it bad as some, but good god i can only imagine the nightmare others might feel.
- Build variety. What you've got is solid, but after my 10th run or so, i had unlocked a fair bit of the guns as it's the only thing I was interested at the start and it's probably just lack of time, but anything that wasn't the revolver or shotgun, just didn't feel like using. Aside from maybe the dual machine guns, but the start up phase with those is so miserable due to the slow shooting, slow reloads, slow kill time. I pick up dual SMG's because I want speed, not to feel like I'm going at the riveting speed of filing my taxes and falling asleep.
-Lastly, a clearer hitbox indicator would be grand, there have been more times than I can count, where it looks like I should be fine, skimming the enemy hitbox, but then I get hit anyway. At not point in almost any other game of this style have I felt like I wasn't sure what my hitbox was, and for a bullet heaven that is so monumentally important the fact that it feels that way is possible the largest ♥♥♥♥ up on the list, but I have a suggestion for it and at least some help for the color blind, make a dot or some kind of marker thats optional that shows what your actual hitbox is. Color blind people get an indicator and non colorblind people either get assistance or you can actually show what the hitboxes is, not whatever I thought it was but have been wrong about.

As it stands there simply isn't enough for me to recommend if it isn't on a sale or part of a bundle as I got. For me personally, the gameplay isn't challenging enough in the right ways, it doesn't feel like I'm weaving in and out using my upgrades to be the boss, it feels like I'm wandering around lost and confused with annoying flies buzzing around me while I'm trying to find a map. Occasionally the flies charge me or have a slingshot. ( the whole reason you play a bullet heaven).

It's aggressively okay.
If this wasn't someones first project or their first game I'd be way harsher, but for what it is, it's okay.
The problem, aside from the bugs and poor optimization, is that the main character Charles is basically absent from the game. I think in total, not counting the final fight. I fought him 4 times, one of which was the first encounter. And that's while hammering the train horn.

The stealth sections are nonexistent, you can literally dead sprint through them and be perfectly fine. Weirdly, there was a point that I had some of the enemy npc's shooting at my train, and per hit they did more damage than charles.

The gameplay loop itself is fine for what it is, but what it is, is a turret section prolonged across two hours.

The soundtrack is probably the best part of it, it does what it needs to, but the fact that I noticed the soundtrack more than the actual game? Not great.

Tl:dr 7/10 because it's a new dev and they show a fair amount of promise, but gameplay isn't meaty in any way, the story is entirely skip-able at best. It's games like this that I wish I could leave a meh review.

If the dev is reading this, the things I'd change would be the following.
-Make Charles far more aggressive.
- Redo literally every voice actor and writing. They come across as stale, boring and flat instead of funny, which is what I assume you're going for.
- Be specific with the upgrades. Every single upgrade cost me the max amount with every level. I don't know what 6-12 scrap means, but it sure as ♥♥♥♥ doesn't mean you need 6-12 scrap to upgrade.
-Make side quests matter. Of the 8 side quests I did, I got more scrap running around the island than actually doing the side quests, and the only one I remember is the one that gives you Bob, but that's because of the gun.

The game is a joke. Between awful Que times, the down right awful feel of both survivor and killer gameplay.
It feels like an unpolished mess, visually the game is amazing, hits the nail on the head.
but then you have to play it and it's garbage.

So, visually the game looks amazing if you have the PC to run it.
The issue comes with the fact that it's so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ buggy that it makes ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bethesda games look bug free.
On no less that six different spots, the game soft locked for me.
Animatronics literally just pull a cyberpunk and teleport behind you if one of the lesser animatronics spot you.
And the animatronics that spot you and warn the stars of the show about you, they can do it while you're hiding, but because you were hiding before one of the big ones that can kill you spawned in they won't actually be able to find you. So you get stuck in this loop of the smaller alert bots spot you in hiding, then the big one gets stuck in place and jiggles around unable to move because they keep getting their code ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up.
So if you try to leave you die and get sent back to the save point.

The selling point of hiding in freddy is bugged as hell to, and half the time I was supposed to get into him I just couldn't, which resulted in me dying several times before the game registered that I would like to get into the damn thing.

As it stands, I can only offer the lines of Jontron.
"There is not a chance I am interested in this bear."
Save you're money and give it a miss till they fix it or it goes on sale.

The game has the potential to be fun, and if you're just looking for a light hearted time, yeah it's fine.
The problem lies in a few things.

One, the items. They range from utterly useless to flat out broken, and I'm not referring to the super weapons.
The strongest item in the game is the rocket, it will allow you to get the keys needed to open the chest, move you closer to the chest, damage anyone in your way and then allow you to get the chest and it's fairly common, my recommendation turn it the ♥♥♥♥ off.

Two, the minigames.
Some of the minigames are fun, enjoyable actually, but so many of them are just mind numbingly boring to the point that the people I play it with, we turn off majority of the minigames simply because they aren't mini games, they are just boring ass tasks between the board, then to top it off, hit boxes are wildly inconsistent, like punching someone not even in the same postal code inconsistent. I though we had hitboxes down back in super mario but I guess not with how bad these ones are.

Three, the maps.

All of the maps suck.
The layouts are boring at worst, aggravating at best. My guess is that the designers saw how mario party did maps, thought that was neat, and just threw a bunch of ♥♥♥♥ together without understanding map design.

They don't give two ♥♥♥♥♥ about a good portion of the community and when pressed to answer about things they rather deflect and act smug.
Don't buy the game, the dev's only want your money and to fleece you for new cosmetics and then refuse to address issues that have been presistent since the game came out rather they chose to make the problem much worse.
