Red Dead Redemption II was anticipated as a worthy successor to its predecessor, a game that once embraced the quirks and vices of its time with bold humor and peculiar charm. Where the original featured memorable, if controversial, characters—like an eccentric Irishman fond of peculiar interactions with horses—its successor offers a more somber, sprawling experience filled with suffragettes, cutthroats, and an overwhelming sense of developer fatigue scattered across its meticulously crafted plains.

What promised to be an exhilarating tale of outlawry, scandal, and wild west freedom instead unfolds as a slow-paced trek through marshes and bogs, with gameplay that often feels like a tedious wilderness simulator. Yet, the narrative redeems itself somewhat through its portrayal of Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang, who, despite their criminal nature, seem improbably progressive. Arthur, in particular, emerges as a paradoxical beacon of equality, acting as an ally to suffragettes and a defender of fairness in a way that feels at odds with the era.

The game’s highlights, like the whimsical drunken escapades with Lenny, bring fleeting joy amidst a narrative that sometimes feels overindulgent in its attempt to appeal to modern sensibilities. While beautifully crafted, Red Dead II often sacrifices the sharp wit and tension of its predecessor for a grand but meandering portrayal of the dying Wild West, leaving players torn between admiration for its ambition and frustration with its execution.
