I can give props to the developers with creating a cohesive story with all loose ends tied up from the previous iteration of the game (albeit in an avant-garde sorta way) so long as you think about what you watched, ruminate, and don’t brush it off as everyday RPG story beats, the buildup, foreshadowing and conclusion are satisfying.

However the battle system is gold. I can see the story not being for everyone, but the battle system is easy to learn and rewarding to master. Using cards in a battle system is usually a creatively bankrupt gimmick, but somehow the developers pulled it off. My only gripe is that monsters don’t respawn. This is a game where I want to implement all sorts of strategies to take out powerful monsters by changing hands, stealing enemy cards, to an all out assault by lowering enemies max HP cap, all for the sake of the love of the grind.

I haven’t had this much fun with a battle system since discovering and exploring Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne’s press turn system. Karta were a wise implementation to make the game genuinely fun, and I think that’s what matters in a turn based RPG to make it engaging enough for a player to justify spending dozens of hours on it.

It also helps that the battle themes are always killer. Shout outs to Fraildog.
