--Violation of Scientific Ethics as a Positive Plot Point

6/10

TLDR:

It’s a roguelite with a car. I had a ton of fun gameplay wise, figuring out the mechanics and how it all works. Along with the underlying upgrade system that makes you not want to quit. While the misinformation generated from poor word choice and story are bad I viewed it more as a puzzle to solve. It’s amazing to read from the writer of the story on social media flaunting her degrees in science and writing. Only for her to write a story that clearly shows why she is not in any scientific field. If you don’t follow proper scientific procedure, you will be blacklisted from the industry. Especially if you FAKE. YOUR. DATA! For her to write a story supporting this behavior shows she learned nothing from her degree, hence why she is a writer instead. You can tell this story made me livid!

Spoiler Territory:

The Negative:

We’ll get back to the story in a bit for now I want to talk about the end game grind and the resulting lack of replayability. I believe that the original intent of the game was for you to rush through the main story and then get to post game where you would then explore the zone for all the recordings and easter eggs while upgrading your car in the process. The problem is nothing found in the zone is more interesting than the scifi/supernatural events at the end of the story. Congrats you fixed your connection to the car, spoke to the dead or spoke through time. Now you just drive around looking for cassette tapes. It’s obvious that they didn’t think they needed an actual post-game since grinding for the “max level car” would be the goal for most players. However, the story being so short results in it being more of an introduction to the zone than an actual story. If you ignore upgrades, just focus on the story and try to get through it. The game is honestly 1-2 hours long at best.

As a result, the only reason to keep playing is to max out your car. Which if you want to do that you can, the only problem is the resource Olympium is hard AF to find. Probably 40 hours of my 95-hour playthrough was spent just trying to gather Olympium for the final upgrade set. And again, none of it was needed, you can complete the story with the staring car (ignoring mandatory upgrades). Combine with the developer’s refusal to expand on the post-game and only push out cosmetics DLC trash I have zero interest in playing the game after completing it. The story is terrible and the Grind for a max car is just as bad.

Now about that story. For those of you that don’t know, with the increasing amount of distrust in the scientific community post covid. A great many film makers and documentarians have slowly stepped up to put out large scale documentaries on the various huge scandals that have happened over the years involving science. The dirty laundry of the scientific community and the examples of what happens when you violate your ethics as a scientist. Victor Ninov, Jan Hendrik Schön, and Hwang Woo Suk all took the scientific community by storm and all of them faked their data and or violated their field’s code of ethics.

So, for a writer that claims to be a scientist that wrote this story. To come up with a story that has one of its central characters fake their data. And then all the other scientists in the story claim the faking of the data wasn’t the problem it was not getting results. My response is “no wonder you are not in a scientific field, this is abhorrent.” This story is unacceptable and for the game to saddle me with this stooge in the post-game is even worse. I may one day play this game again from scratch if a new story is given but unless that story is in the post-game only. I will never play the post-game.

The Meh:

Customization I know a bunch of people are jumping up and down and screaming the game is woke for having pride flags and BLM. Considering the game came out 3 weeks after the BLM fraud, and the fact that the developers refused to comment on this subject. It’s clear that these customization options are in the game to get a better loan, then to virtue signal.

Thou the options in the base game are abysmal, like I said I hundred precented the game. I mean it when I say, “the base interior you get at the start is one of the best in the game.” There is nothing that stands out only options that are side upgrades instead of direct upgrades to the look of the car. Then there is all the DLC cosmetics, they are all terrible. Theres nothing cool like art deco, modern, or straight up 90s wood paneling. They do themes and themes are “make your car butt ugly.” I don’t even understand why you are selling them just add them to your game. The game already sold an absurd amount of copies.

The last slight problem is the game’s misinformation. Ninety nine percent of the time this is ether bad wording that ends up implying how a function in the game works but it doesn’t or functionality that is hidden from the user. here’s a quick list:
1. Anchors do not cause the Zone Storms to come early, grabbing them should be your number one goal.
2. Anchors do not cause more Anomalies to spawn.
3. A routes Zone Storm internal timer does not ticking down until you start moving.
4. You can pause at any time.

Everything I listed here is still being debated by fools in the community, and all of this I have confirmed how it actually functions. I enjoyed learning all this and spending the time. However, I have provided video evidence that this is how these functions work. This community still spreads this misinformation that is complete antithetical to the gameplay causing people to just not buy the game.

The Positive:

It’s no secret that AAA gaming has done basically everything it can to end itself. With overworking employees, slave contracts for new hires, experienced developers being forced into management, and experienced developers just out right leaving in response. As a result, there is no creativity, a lack of vision, and a generation that needs to rebuild from scratch.

As a result, people are looking to indie games for all the missing above. While the developers of this game are new they clearly knew what they wanted to execute. This is a rogue-lit, driving, and exploration game. Something that will never combine in Game Dev Tycoon but here it is working flawlessly.

You pick a Route to an exit. You go out, look at your mini map in the car and make a route. You chose the best way to grab the Anchors. You clear the route as fast as possible grabbing Anchors and all the other resources you can along the way. Then you go to the next Route on your journey and do it all over again. Until you get to the exit you want, using the energy from the anchors you collect, you open a Breach to teleport back to the shop. Racing against the Storm to the breach to make it back to the shop alive. This is a ton of fun and most runs can be done in 20-30 minutes.

Due to the upgrades and how they are normally one part or a small amount of energy away from being grabbed. The game has the glorious “Just One More Turn” effect. “Oh I unlock new wheels but I don’t have the ruber time to go get it”, or “I unlocked a new shield I want to test it out on escapes.” You’re here for the gameplay and the game provides it.
