As others noted, it's more a visual story than a game. I love the art style, the mechanics were intuitive (although the brake was awkwardly located) and you felt like you were making progress with each upgrade.
It was fun while it lasted, but that's the main drawback of this type of title; barely 2 and a half hours of play time, with no real replay value.
It felt vaguely reminiscent of Limbo and Inside, but lacked the depth as a platformer in it's own right. None of the puzzles were challenging, and most were so linear that without seeing the big picture just stepping on red buttons will get you by.
I'd recommend buying it on sail *ba dum tiss* but personally I wouldn't say it's worth full price, as gorgeous as it is.

While it didn't drag on or overstay its welcome, I can't help but think that the suction and repair tools could perhaps have been used in puzzles in some way, just to add a puzzle slightly less formulaic than "step on button A, step on button B, solved". There were hints of creative powers at work but I just felt that it fell short, consigning it to a visual story rather than an actual platformer.
The section with the mine cart and casting a cog was slightly more interesting, although I'm sure I'm not alone in having solved it practically accidentally. Without having seen that a cog was missing when I initially dropped down, I was pressing buttons to forge a "thing" without any idea of why it was necessary until I carried it down the tunnel.
The final section also felt disappointing; debris was raining down but was somehow less damaging than a hail storm, and with no concern about being caught, the ship breaking or running out of fuel, I felt no tension from it.
Even another 15 seconds of pyroclastic death slowly closing in with your ship catching fire around you would have suited the visuals and score where the current sequence feels incongruent.

An addicting, fast paced game, FTL combines retro-style graphics with old-school difficulty, providing great replay value with lots of customisation for your ship and a variety of foes that you will face. Initially I didn't understand the point of the alternative layouts of ships, but they do make you try out different strategies of play, which completely alter the way you will build towards the end-boss. Often you go through the game finding the part you need, just when after you upgraded your shields, forcing you to either sell weapons or drones or leave behind a part you ight not ever see again. The decisions you must make are really make FTL a brilliant game, which has emphasis on your actions during and between combat.

All in all, great value for money, and a unique gem of a game. Highly recommended.
