Great incredibly detailed game. I've never seen so deep building mechanics.

Sure, building is sometimes a bit finicky, graphics is dated. But even with some flaws, it's still miles ahead of any competition. No point of playing any other city builder after this.

What can I say - best game ever made.

EDIT (2023): Still the best game, getting even better in near future. :)

+ Nice flight mechanics (2 options: arcade and simulation)
+ Good variety of missions

- Extremely slow and boring progress with starting plane until you unlock another one, then it starts to be fun
- Controls of gun: who thought it is a good idea to rotate gun slightly to the left to not match with the orientation of controller and also to set shooting action to touchpad and not trigger? Those shooting missions would be such fun with proper controls!
- Infuriating 100% requirement for gold medals - if you don't score perfect full points just on one of x targets, you have no chance for gold, if you are completionist then good luck and iron will in some levels...

Movement: Smooth + rotation on all axis (cockpit with some extra comfort options)
Controls: Motion controllers

My progress: 2.5 hours (2 of 4 planes unlocked)
Recommended price: 10-15 €

My overall recommendation score: 65%

+ Great fun for up to 5 people - and it is fun even with just 1 friend on PC
+ Useful powerups for both sides
+ Many options to better balance games

- Online multiplayer is not available anymore - so you just can't play this alone

Movement: None (only room-scale with snap turning and height adjustments)
Controls: Motion controllers + keyboard or gamepads for other players

My progress: 4 hours
Recommended price: 5-10 €

My overall recommendation score: 75%

+ Few types of towers with different powerups
+ Very cheap - no reason to not give it a chance
+ Nice physical control of your tower (except not well responding touchpad for powerups)

- You need to organize a game with your friends if you want to play multiplayer, the lobby is empty otherwise
- Few technical issues - just minor frame drops for me, but game-breaking bugs for others
- Not very active developer - not sure if the game has been abandoned, but there are no signs of activity a few months now

Movement: None (only room-scale)
Controls: Motion controllers

My progress: 2.0 hours
Recommended price: 1-5 €

My overall recommendation score: 60%

Usually, when reviewing games, I'm keeping some extra space under the max - "what if something even slightly better comes up?". This is the first game I wouldn't be afraid to rate with 100% or 10/10 or whatever. Sure, there is some space for improvement, but in comparison with other games, KC:D is just out of scales.

Target audience: However, it is not for everyone, the main reason it doesn't have 100% on steam are people jumping on hype train without knowing anything about the game. If you are a gamer, who rush games, skips all dialogues and just follow a marker on map without knowing what he is supposed to do there, then don't touch this game; it is not for you. The game is not about action but about immersion (not VR immersion sadly :( ).

Technical state: The other reasons for lower ratings were bugs and bad optimization for some people, but most of it is already fixed, and rest will be fixed or improved soon. When I'm writing this review, I didn't encounter any major bug (just a few funny glitches) and had very good performance on my PC.

Now when "cons" are dealt with, let's see what's the good here:

World and character: I love sandbox games, where the world is doing its own thing, and player just needs to find his way through the game. Also, I love when your character in a game is just an average guy, not a hero, not the chosen one and especially not Dragonborn, the mightiest mage, the stealthiest thief, the strongest warrior in one person! I don't know about you, but when I want to relax and forget about real-world troubles, I want to play as an average character, not the overpowered hero like I'm always outside of game worlds... :D

Historical accuracy: It is always much better when things are based on reality. Not only that KC:D world design is by many rated as one of the best ever, which (considering it is just copied from a real region in Bohemia) just proves that reality is the best designer. Everything just feels better when it's believable. You can use this as an educational tool to learn something about that era and it is fun. Usually, you are forced to learn lore created by some random guys with a lot of logical holes, and when you finish that game, you are supposed just to forget it because you probably won't ever go through this fantasy world again. But KC:D presents the real history, real architecture; you experience how medieval people behave, their daily life. And that all without logical holes because it all was not created just to sell one little game, it emerged through people trying to survive in that centuries. All you learn about this world is not that useless like in other RPGs.

Game mechanics: All mentioned above was what I expected after their Kickstarter campaign, and I would be perfectly fine with just that. But the game also brings so many interesting game mechanics - where success depends on both character stats and player's skill. The most realistic combat (most realistic on mouse and keyboard, next step is definitely VR), nice lockpicking, pickpocketing, awesome alchemy, charisma based on clothing and so much more. Each activity you choose to do is hard in the beginning but extremely satisfying when you (and Henry) learn it. Although everyone denounces save system, I think it fits the game well. I know how repeated save-try-load cycle can totally ruin immersion in games.

Story: I'm usually not a person who would appreciate a story in a game. Mainly because story-driven games are often very short and it is not entertaining to replay them. But KC:D managed to connect great living sandbox world with strong plot exceptionally. Also considering replayability - you can solve some quest in different ways, so since the beginning, I'm looking forward to starting again and roleplay as completely other Henry (I'm aiming for no-kills and virgin achievements next time).

Other things: This review is already too long, and I didn't even mention beautiful graphics, nice mocap animations, mostly good voice overs (although it lacks authentic Czech dubbing), outstanding quests and so on. Btw. dev is very active even after release - I think much more awesome stuff will come soon.

TLDR: This masterpiece is the best game ever made (for me :P). It is a nice end for flat gaming. Last two years I was playing almost only in VR, but KC:D tied me to screen for hours again. I hope the next KC will be in VR! :)

+ Nice graphics - except lens flare which doesn't look good in VR
+ Although it is just one ride, it is quite long and offers variety of interesting environments

- Simply not immersive - strange sounds and not realistic physics (or rather animation) make game not believable at all
- Sometimes, there are few frames dropped
- Very short experience (about 6 minutes)

Movement: None (cart moves with you smoothly)
Controls: None (just Space to start ride)

My progress: 0.2 hours, finished (2x)
Recommended price: 0-1 €

My overall recommendation score: 35%

+ Spectator camera on helicopter - ideal for viewers looking at screen or on stream
+ Destruction - physics coresponds with cartoony graphics

- Quite short - just 4 levels get repetitive soon
- Teleportation only - sometimes it is hard to find a spot where you can teleport; walking and smashing would be much better

Movement: Teleportation
Controls: Motion controllers

My progress: 1 hour, finished (~3x each level)
Recommended price: 1-3 €

My overall recommendation score: 55%

+ Coop - play with 1 friend (carefully - double the weapons, but still same amount of ammo in levels!)
+ Nice graphics

- Overpriced - at least at this stage of VR, it is not worth 40 €; this is no more one of top VR games like 2 years ago
- Really bad controls - it gets very frustrating to even move around if you are already used to controls from other VR FPS games
- Getting stuck far too often - room scale movement helps, but it still breaks immersion (and you can even go through solid objects this way)
- Very linear and predictable - just one way to go; zombies always spawn behind you after any progress even after you cleared every possible area
- Annoying wannabe funny protagonist - he repeats cringy comments and breaks immersion over and over...
- Light/shadow glitches - flickering light; light too glaring while cannot light up even close area

Movement: Teleportation, Touchpad locomotion
Controls: Motion controllers

My progress: 3.2 hours, finished (1x)
Recommended price: 15 €

My overall recommendation score: 60%
