Town of Salem 2 Alpha Player Review:

This review will be discussing the time spent playing the alpha of Town of Salem 2 and compare it to my 7-year experience playing Town of Salem. (over 3,000 hours)

What I Like:
Town of Salem 2 offers a lot of new and exciting experiences whilst also having the comfort of the original game. The new roles and reworks are refreshing and have me looking forward to seeing what strategies players come up with. As well as this, some of the new roles have taken inspiration from the community and mods of Town of Salem.

There is a new tagging system which allows you to highlight players, roles and actions which makes it easier to formulate wills and spread information across the town. Compared to the original, Town of Salem 2 has made it easier for newer players to pick up the mechanics of the game - something the original lacked when they removed the tutorial in 2016.

The visual quality of the game has improved a lot since the original release of Town of Salem. There are many new animations which keep the game entertaining! It has taken inspiration from the original game but also Traitors in Salem - especially when it comes to animation.

What Could Be Improved:
Town of Salem 2 has a lot of potential and I am excited to see what they will do within the early access. Despite liking all of the animations for the skins, deaths and abilities I feel there should be an option to turn them off for people who are players on lower-end devices - it also can make some games unnecessarily long.

One thing that was attractive about the original was the ability to play almost anywhere (at home, at work, on the move) given it was on Flash and mobile. I would love to see a mobile port of the game so we can still have that option.

One other thing I dislike about the new game is the lack of kingmakers - I understand that they were removed for balance reasons however roles such as executioner, jester and survivor were great in that sense because it gave evils an easier claim. There are too many confirmed townie roles within the game and I feel it is unbalanced because of that fact. I also feel that in its current state - the coven is a pretty powerful team compared to the mafia. This is because a lot of the coven can kill, unlike the mafia who only had the mafia killing (mafioso/godfather) and the ambusher. The devs have done some balancing changes which I appreciate however there is still a lot needed to be done.


Overall:
I am excited to see where my favourite game will go with the sequel- I still do not think it is perfect however I am hoping having access to early access will give the developers a chance to make this game flourish. Unlike Traitors in Salem, I know they are doing a lot more marketing and I am praying the game will be active. I am excited to see what will come within the future of Town of Salem 2!

I am so so, disappointed. I was extremely excited for this game. Paid $15 just for it to be f2p in the end.

This is what a horror game should do: make you feel uneasy, anxious and on edge rather than throwing jumpscares at you. Making the player feel a sense of upcoming dread.

The fact it was so simple aswell: the music change, change of atmosphere - it doesn't need to be much to get someone on edge.

For a prologue, this is brilliantly done. I cannot wait for a full release of Paper Lily eventually if they continue the same style as this game.
