Early Access Review
Fantastic voxel survival game. Especially if you enjoy building awesome structures.

Needs Archery reworked. As of the time of this review, it feels punishing that you need to carry so much ammo with you and still probably don't out dps either the mage or the warrior.

Melee weapons need their hit boxes expanded vertically. Often times, if a mob floats or flies, you will not be capable of hitting it. There is a skill which allows you to pull flying mobs to you with your grapple, but there are some particularly dangerous mobs which it doesn't work on. Most notably, the floating lich guy with two scythes. No matter what I do to drag this guy to me, I cannot hit him with a melee weapon even as my hammer visually goes through the enemy. Wisps are another problem, you cannot target them with grapple. Your only option is to give up being a warrior for a minute and shoot them down with magic or bow.

Those are really my only two complaints though. Otherwise, the game runs smoothly for me and there is oodles of content to chip away at.

Gameplay Summary: This game feels like Fallout 76, but with staggeringly fewer bugs, vastly better graphics, and doesn't feel like the classic "Create a problem, then sell a solution" that Fallout 76 and so many other F2P games are so well known for. I can draw parallels to nearly every aspect of Fallout 76, and in virtually every case, Once Human just does it better. If that sounds like something you would be interested in, you should absolutely consider downloading and playing this game.

Monetization note: So far, the cash shop is extremely fair and doesn't appear to be pay2win. They include cosmetics, deco for your house, and a minor cost reduction for building within your pocket dimension (Eternaland). Even the Battle Pass is far more reasonably priced than other live service games with battle passes I've seen recently (Looking at you D4). It offers a good looking full outfit, several individual outfit pieces, weapon skins, emotes, and deco for $10. Considering I would have gladly paid $30-40 for the base game... I'm perfectly happy with their monetization setup in this game. Unless I'm missing something, I would put it in top 2 best F2P monetization systems I've seen thus far.

Controversy: People take issue with the wording of the Eula, Privacy Policy, ToS, startup files etc. These are all industry standard though and this controversy was started by people who don't understand any of it and just really love fear mongering on social media. The startup files are one which tracks how many times you've launched the game, and one which assigns a unique ID to your computer so that the standard data that they do collect can be associated with a unique user. Why they are in the startup? That's a reasonable question. It's not a good reason to give the game a negative review, however.

Should this change at any point, I will do my best to update this review.

Comment: Quite frankly, whoever was the Environment Artist/Level Designer for The Ascent, they created possibly the most visually stunning and complex world I've seen in a video game. This is the world that Cyberpunk 2077 should have had.

Step 1. Build a brick
Step 2. Put rockets on the brick
Step 3. Slam on the throttle
Step 4. Remember that you need a way to stop
Step 5. Spin violently in space while trying to aim your engines exactly opposite to your trajectory
Step 6. Use an asteroid to stop yourself... into a million pieces
Step 7. Build a new brick

10/10: Wish EVE had more Avorion in it. I might actually come to play EVE seriously if it did.

Firstly, I'm not a PvPer. I could care less about the battle royale style games out there. This review is entirely for the PvE side of the game.

From a PvE perspective, I rank Ark as being in my top 3 for survival/builder games. The other two being Terraria and Minecraft. Just like Terraria and Minecraft, Ark has what I'd call a "solid base game" - most of the core mechanics that I would come to expect from a survival game. In Ark's case, you also have a pretty extensive gotta' catch them all style taming system.

What makes these three games special in the survival/builder genre is their openness to modding. When you buy Ark, you don't just get the base game with the base systems... you get a hundred different gaming experiences that all make use of the base game that is Ark. Mods can add anything from new creatures, tools, armors, buildings, etc to entirely new maps or systems like classes or magic/technology. You might have one play through where you disable taming entirely and fiddle with player stats so that with enough effort you might be able to beat the game entirely on foot. The next play through might be exactly the opposite where your character is utterly worthless without the help of your tamed creatures. Maybe you turn off all flight capabilities and force the players to think of creative ways to traverse the world.

There have been plenty of other survival/builder games which had the same good base game as Ark, but stopped a step short because they neglected to cater to the modding community. Ark makes modding easy and gives all of the tools a modder needs to take the game to all kinds of different levels.

If you enjoy Minecraft or Terraria, and especially if you have enjoyed either of them modded, then you will not likely regret purchasing Ark.

My one negative that I would shine on Ark is that it takes a pretty solid computer to run properly. It will probably take upwards of 180-220GB of space on your harddrive, and it's a RAM and GPU hog. Don't try and run this on a potato.

To all the potential newly hatched space ninjas out there, here are the pros and cons of Warframe!

Pros:
+More character mobility/agility than any other game in existence.
+Very responsive controls.
+A lovable psychopath for a ship AI
+Wonderful story telling with twists on the scifi genre that are quite refreshing.
+Enough warframe and weapon choices to have a perfect fit for everybody.
+A solid difficulty curve with enjoyable content for new and vet players alike.
+The ugliest canine companion you've ever seen (Maybe because it hatched from an egg...)
+Tons of "Game Modes" to keep things interesting and promote using different frames
+One of the friendliest online communties in the gaming industry
+Promotion of creative problem solving through unique builds and playstyles
+Stunning graphics, especially considering Warframe's humble beginnings
+Runs unexpectedly well on potatoes (Sorry lemons and bricks, maybe next time)
+Truly free to play. Very little requires platinum and the amount of platinum you need can be easily gotten by selling mods to players.

Cons:
-Very little instant gratification. Time and effort is required to get anywhere.
-I've never seen my doggo poo in the field. I think he's hiding it on my ship somewhere.
-100% online. If your internet sucks, you're going to have a bad time.
-Not for players who suffer from vertigo.
-Like all ARPGs, farming materials for hours is a required part of the experience.

Depends on how you look at it...:
☼The gap between vets and newbs is massive. As a noob you will feel like there is an ocean between you and the MR 20+ players... and there is. All the more to strive for!
☼Sometimes Digital Extremes makes a less-than-great call. This is a result of pushing what a free to play game can be. The majority of the community understands that DE will forever do their best to create a game they can be proud of, but some patience may be required!
☼The game has become massive. Like... really massive. You're not given a whole lot of direction on where to go either. Can be rough if you're more interested in a guided experience. Fantastic if you just love exploring though!

Early Access Review
So I was building a base on the first day and some random dude runs up and starts staring at me. At first I assumed he was just curious about what I was doing, so I let him watch. Had the natives never seen a log cabin before? When I finally built my door he started yipping and yelling like I'd just shown him some kind of miracle! I thought, "Man, if this guy is impressed by door hinges, he's going to flip when I show him my lighter!". Here I am, a modern day Promethius bringing fire to cavemen! This is awesome!

As the spark of fire came from my hand though, the savage flipped his ♥♥♥♥ and started attacking me! In self defense I was forced to chop this poor guy to death with my fire axe. I guess in my panicked state I wanted to make sure he was dead so I just kept chopping at his motionless body... It wasn't until his leg came clean off that I snapped to and realized what I'd done. Holding a warm human leg in my hand, looking up at a whole flood of natives staring at me as I dismembered their friend.

You could tell by the look in their eyes that they weren't too pleased. I wanted to tell them that it was all self defense and that I didn't want to kill their friend! I didn't know the language!

One rushed at me but stopped short at the mangled body in front of me. He knelt down, putting his hand on his friend's lifeless body... but then he... he started EATING the body!!

The rest of the savages rushed at me screaming wildly. I panicked again! I swung with the only thing I had in my hands... the leg that I'd chopped from the first one. I fought them off for what seemed like hours, and yet somehow when I was exhausted and covered in blood, I was the only one left standing. Cold, wet, and hungry I walked back into my cabin and tried to warm myself by the fire - eventually falling asleep.

Birds woke me the next morning. I hadn't eaten since I'd arrived on the island, I had lived on rain runoff alone for nearly three days. Fighting for my very life the night before had only made my hunger worse. It was time to find myself a steady source of food. I'd seen some deer and rabbits the days before, maybe some traps would yield the neurishment I required.

As I opened my door an idea suddenly struck me...

I already had plenty of meat...

Right here...

10/10 survived by eating the natives.

An absolute must for people who enjoy the sandbox/crafting/minecraft style of game. Offering a great time for both casual and more seasoned players alike, Terraria becomes a space where you can play with any of your pals or family without feeling like someone's being left out. 10/10, one of my favorite gaming experiences of all time.
