Early Access Review
Hits a lot of the same notes that Slay the Spire does in the deckbuilder roguelike genre while remaining fairly unique with its own interesting mechanics and charm. All the classes are fun and well balanced the backpack system giving you essentially a sideboard is very interesting and adds a lot of depth to the game the combat is fun and has some pretty thought provoking mechanics that add more to your turns and all the fights with few exceptions force you to make clever use of the backpack as well as think about where and how you distribute your damage. For being early access the quality is absolutely insane and the dev is always in touch with the community 10/10 if you like deck builder roguelikes.

There is a lot to say about Slay the Spire that makes it good from the phenomenal balance to the plethora of natural synergies between cards that makes building your deck a new puzzle to solve every run letting you think creatively about how cards work together and creating combos that feel good as well as the great diversity in the types of challenges you have to over come from run to run there aren't any areas where the Spire feels weak.

Replay value is done nicely the game is balanced well at high and low difficulties it doesn't pull any punches in difficulty as you go up in ascension level either keeping the game interesting and engaging. The art style is nice easy on the eyes and makes a really comfortable and beautiful atmosphere. The music is extremely well composed and something you can even listen to casually while doing other things having some nice relaxing tracks some very intense tracks and some that are somewhere inbetween. The combat itself has a few clever mechanics the most notable of course being the intent system which is a big part of why fights feel GOOD in this game knowing what the enemies will do and planning out turns to mitigate just enough damage and do just enough damage is very satisfying.

The classes themselves are all also a very big part of why the Spire is good all four (and potentially more to come) really just feel different in all of the right ways and as different in those ways as they could possibly be. The Ironclad, Silent, Defect and the Watcher each have their own individual mechanics and cards to play with that challenge you to think differently from each other and offer new and interesting ways to approach deck building and fights. Maybe one run you play an Ironclad deck that focuses on stacking strength and playing reaper in fights to full heal before finishing the fight out then next run you play an Ironclad deck that uses barricade to stack a ♥♥♥♥ load of block to scale your fights that way instead then maybe next run you play Silent and use Runic Pyramid and bullet time to set up large combo plays then a watcher run that swaps stances constantly to scale block and damage there's a lot of variety.

The controls and general animations and UI of the game are also quite good as well everything is easy to see and pretty clear and since its a game that encourages you to take your time slow down and think things through with the information you have the UI being easy to navigate and quick to reach information you want is a BIG deal for the feel of the game. The modding community is quite robust as well and there are a lot of good mods out there that add new characters make the games UI even more convenient/easy to navigate and use or some other cool stuff like streaming tools (there's even a mod made by one of the major community figures jorbs with professional voice acting and some really cool new characters).

All in all the game is a master piece if you enjoy slow strategic games that are challenging and want something you can sink your time into for a while. Even if it's not normally up your alley there's a lot of good here to enjoy so I'd say its worth checking out anyway 10/10.

Retains the decision making brutal difficulty and perma death that roguelikes are known for while accelerating the gameplay and making it always tense in combat looks beautiful as well and has a great OST just buy it.

I read the reviews thought it sounded neat bought it and booted it up and man Akane is a whirl. Everything from the fast paced gameplay to the arcade scoring system to the absolutely FANTASTIC retro pixel art to the general aesthetic and vibe that Akane gives off makes this game super easy to lose yourself in and enjoy. The story is pretty basic and there is much to be desired but for not having any real emphasis on having a proper background for Akane and the rest of the very limited cast it does a good job of cutting out all of the irrelevant details to the situation you are in. The progression is challenged based too and gives you new gear to customize anything from graphical changes to useful abilities and gameplay changes that can significantly impact how you play the game and how it feels. For the price this game is an absolute STEAL and if you like fast paced arcade games like Devil Daggers or Hotline Miama it would be foolish to not pick this game up.
