The game itself is pretty decent and I've a had lot of fun playing it.

That being said, unfortunately, I can't recommend the Steam release in its current state, especially if you're already playing the game via the standalone launcher.

• The game download from Steam is not the entire game download. You are forced to download the rest of the game files from the Darkwinter servers, to the tune of about 36 GiB.
  
• There's no functionality to bind your Sunborn ID to your Steam account.
  
• Purchases through the standalone launcher are 5% off. This discount is not available through Steam without workarounds.

Update: As of April 30th, 2025, nothing has improved that would change my review.

Thoroughly chill slice of life game doing its own thing very much in the vein of Animal Crossing. Beautiful artwork, great music. Gameplay is very satisfying.

I'm eager to see where the story of the game goes and I'm totally down for it playing out in realtime as a laid back cozy experience.

Great game. Unfortunately, I cannot leave a positive review of this game due to actions of the developer. On September 15th, 2020 the developers introduced a significant change to the requirements of the game with the addition of the anti-cheat software Easy Anti-Cheat. Easy Anti-Cheat requires elevation to administrator privileges to install a kernel level driver for anti-cheating purposes. As someone who maintains good security practices, I do not purchase or play games on PC that require elevated permissions like this. I attempted to get a refund (both automatic and manual tickets via Steam) multiple times because the game is now completely unplayable for me and was denied due to playtime for all of them. I contacted Mediatonic via their support website and was brushed off and my ticket was permanently closed. The developers are clearly ignoring the problem they introduced and unreasonably expect everyone to blindly opt-in to this change.

I've been playing Caves of Qud on and off for the better part of nine years or so, possibly more. I'm not sure exactly when I discovered Caves of Qud, my original forum registration was on 9/10/10.

Technically, I received my Steam copy of the game for free. I originally received a beta code for Steam which has carried over into the Early Access launch.

It is hands down, one of the best roguelike games I've ever played and contains one of the most unique, fantastical, of the settings I've come across.

I could gush about specific details, but really it's all there on the store page. They've gone to great lengths to make the game navigable by new players, and it clearly shows.

The developers have been nothing short of amazing, very responsive to feedback I've thrown their way over the many years I've been playing. It's been an amazing journey to watch this game grow and evolve from what I originally encountered, and they'll have my continued support indefinitely.

Very, very short. And it's 8 months until the next game? Eugh.
