Early Access Review
Pushed an anti-modding update with a kernel level anti cheat system. I recommend finding some way to get the pre-2022.2.2 version and just try working off that. VRchat made a promise of community and creativity and that promise was broken.

Having now played a mathematically significant number of hours, I felt it appropriate to review this finally.

If you are here at this point, you likely already saw some gameplay I think, so I will try focusing on what is not immediately apparant.

This game, depending on who you are, will consume your life at least for a few weeks. While a bit schrödingers cat-y about remembering some of the settings, requiring a second glance after saving a world, creating a world gives you a ton of options, from the number of asteroids, density, if the world is infinite, if there are planets to small stuff like inventory size and tool speed.
You can also choose between stuff like arcade sound (no air needed) to realistic (the opposite).

One problem with these settings is, that there seems to be no easy way to make presets. Infact, I saw nothing of the sort so far.
This is not that much of a problem with the vanilla set of about 50 settings, but rapidly spirals out of control once you have accumulated a set of mods you just do not play without. In my case, the speed unlocker mods and build-and-repair for that good ol not needing to weld everything manually...

At some point, you may have a list with 200+ mods, with limited search capability and your basic set buried inbetween misc armor mods, that one joke mod you barely use, and a few dropship things.

The universe is you-centric btw. The sun spins around you and none of the voxel terrain ever moves. What you saw moving was either a grid (ships, vehicles, stations) or the mined material form of voxel terrain.

Also, rovers need security. If you move fast and a tiny bit of terrain softly wispers near your non-wheel blocks, you eat dirt. Infact, I lost entire chassis to 1cm bumps before, because the damage dragged through the whole set of armor blocks. Bumper that stuff to hell and back or die. Those are your choices. Choose wisely.

Sounds all pretty negative, right? Well, I will have you know I am currently playing cyberpunk 2077 and am having a ton of fun, so if you also do, you may know how this is still a recommendation.
The game has a ton of flaws. DLC stuff is in the build menu, even if you dont own the stuff, physics are a recommendation and sometimes really need a hug after breaking all your stuff in a random freakout, enemies (when enabled) can spawn basically anywhere with open air contact to terrain...
Still, if you know about the issues and how to avoid or mitigate them (Nobody with any value cares if you cheat to re-aquire glitched away ships) you can have a great time with it.
One of the big issues that many people have with DLCs here is, that they seem to contain mechanics extremely similar to some mods.
In turn, this means that there are mods with mechanics that are extremely similar to the DLCs.
You can play in a ton of different ways. Scavenging any ship you come by, welding them together in an abomination of steel and hydrogen, digging a hole and only ever leaving with remote controlled drones... its all pretty neat in my opinion. Anyways, lurk more, watch some forum posts and then buy the thing. Its fun.

This part of the review is also my refund request:
"I generally have all this game offers and more in my library already. For this graphical level, it also has no excuse to run as bad as it does. Seemingly only 3d because they were afraid to be 2d, which would have opened the game up to a much wider audience and made it much less prone to weird behaviour and bugs. Not to say I saw bugs, but what little I played was not polished to say the least."

I already own Factorio, which is immensely bigger in size and polish. I also bought Mindustry, which cleanly fulfils the desire to play a smaller scale game of this type.

This clumsily falls in the middle, without the option of combat it seems. Additionally, with the interface and performance problems, which have no business in a game this low poly and for longer playthroughs potentially intricate, I cannot see myself having any fun in a longer playthrough. I also had little entertainment from my 43 minutes of playtime so far. Unless the game gets a major interface facelift (usability, not looks) AND trims some computational fat, I do not see myself adding to that playtime.


A few suggestions:
I could barely see which ressources were needed for any building. Only after 30 minutes did I find the tiny fields for this. That may be related to my larger screen and could be remedied with a scaling option for the entire and/or parts of the interface and text.

People walking around often clipped into each other, while making attempts to be blocked instead. Forcing the game on a hidden and slower round based movement system may remedy this.

Everything is already grid based, there is little reason for this to be 3d with what it does with height or rather, what it does not (seem, I did not yet see how the scaffolding holds up).

While it is a bit tedious to progress, I have not seen any failure state other than maybe somehow removing every ressource from the map. This is something I decided not to spend the time testing, but still, Informing the player of things that may (or may NOT) doom their playthrough would be nice, to make sure nobody panics too much when faced with what they believe to be the end only to later realize that there is no such thing.

If there are no graphs for production, an info screen about which building produces what and where production has stopped, a system for keeping ressources stashed for building, a minimap and a bunch of map filters, there should be.


All in all, this for the player would be babbys first factorio and as such, I would recommend it. If you already play games like these however, as it stands you should skip this game.

I deeply regret not having tried this game before. It runs flawless on my laptop and immediately gave me the precise chaotic combat experience I had when playing dead cells. I also found one place, where a doublejump is intended, but managed to get there with the up thrust attack.
Beat branching like that is awesome.

I can definitely see the frustration some reviewers have, Personally, I would only buy this on a discount.

The minigames are easily comparable to ozu and determine the hit and evade rate. There is sometimes in the first two levels no indicator until .25 seconds before you need to glide through arrows or click a bubble, to even have a hit, and no enemy seems to display in any way, what shape the minigame takes.
You need to find that out yourself, by running head first into battles.
Fortunately, even loosing gains you EXP and gold, which means this is not very frustrating, just quite a bit frustrating.

One glaring mistake, is the buying of weapon upgrades. If you decide against a weapon, reselecting the older weapon actually un-buys that newer weapon. I lost 150 gold through that.

The tutorial DEFINITELY needs to be more integrated into the game itself. I spent my entire first game being destroyed without ever having seen the other empire, because I was a bit too far away from the only existing next star and had to slowly crawl towards colonizing my star system, which lasted until I got a message warning me about the impending enemy victory from them having exploring 60% of the map.
Will still buy the game though, since there are worse things for the current (1.99€) price.
