At this point i have played 1.4 hours of Rivals of Aether 2. I am not a fighting game player, I have played smash only once at my friends place and Street Fighter X Tekken a long time ago. I picked this game up because I like Ludwig so wanted to see what it's like.
Bought the game at 25% discount at £18.74 and I still cannot recommend this game for those who do not play fighting games.

This was my experience:
Open the game and play the tutorial for movement, attacking and defending. The orb companion which explains the tutorial I personally found annoying and there is a lot of text to read, I feel like it's possible to explain the mechanics in simpler terms. Even when I finished the tutorial I wasn't able to remember and use those specific attacks.
After the tutorial I went back to the menu and saw either local play or online, because I don't have anyone to play with locally I went to public. It asked me what difficulty you want and I chose beginner, as again, I don't play fighting games. Then I'm asked for a server, I live in UK and the closest server was in Paris, keep in mind there's only like 7 ish servers around Europe area and much more in the US, so if you're in Europe take into account the lag (will get into this later). So I try to join a casual game, but no joke 5 minutes later and no one joined to a match. I tried 1v1, 2v2, and FFA, and in all games i just kept waiting and no matches were found. So I think okay, ranked should have players so I start up Ranked for my first placement match. Keep in mind I've only did the tutorial with that fire lion dude. It finds a match and I instantly start getting massive lag, the game pausing every 2-5 seconds, the ping counter showing red 45+ and the enemy beating me while I'm barely able to move my randomly chosen character. This lasts for a good minute and my first life is down. The ping improves a little bit and I'm able to control my character. And I was absolutely demolished by my opponent with the rank 800. The exact same happened with the games 2 and 3, me doing a little bit of damage, but everyone being LEAGUES ahead of me, barely getting 1 proper kill in 3 games. As you can imagined I was steamrolled every single round, which I've lost, thus making it 3 loses. Then finally I tried to start the 4th and final game, but none were getting found, so I opened the network options, turned on all servers as none were showing the ms speeds, and tried again. Now it would find a match, but would never connect to a game, after like 2 minutes of waiting on the main menu 'MATCHED' screen, the game would just cancel and throw me back. At this point I was hungry so closed the game, ate and reopened it. And it somehow placed me at like 680 rank, even though I never played the 4th game. Well whatever, lets play. I get into my first match and get absolutely destroyed, round after round I get placed into games with people who just land every hit after hit, blocking them just doesn't seem to work. So I played about 5 more games losing every round yet again and feeling personally very bad. Yes I'm not good at fighting games, but as a new player, the experience of trying to get into the game has been only negative.

I feel like people only play competitive and so no-one is in casual to practice, thus for someone who is basically playing a fighting game for the first time, the experience is pretty damn horrible unless you like getting steamrolled by players who actually know how to do so.

Final note I'm seriously debating refunding the game.

Currently Not a game, but more of a tool to make your own gadget of your imagination.
In the future a story mode will be released which will make it more of a traditional gaming experience.
However even at this point I highly recommend getting Retro Gadgets if you are a the type of person to tinker with electronics. Or learn about it in a safe environment where your mistakes of putting the wrong size transistor will not burn your one and only 7 segment display.. Learned it the hard way :)

Took me around 25 hours to beat on Normal and besides minor bugs the game is everything I wished and hoped for.

If you like dungeon crawlers and base builders then this is a very interesting and cool wombo-combo.

Also music is to die for :)

This game is by far the most addictive game I've ever played. If you never played it, then do yourself the favor and do play the crap out of it
