This game is not for everyone. It's rather brutal, and can be literally unfair at times. I normally played it for 1-3 hour sessions because I wanted to cool down from the stress it mounted on me from multiple different situations.

If you have the patience for it, though. Rain World's ecosystem is one I found truly fascinating. The world is beautiful, and the game wants you to discover everything about it, from the creatures, to the wildlife, to the basic game mechanics of your movement capabilites.

Initially stumbling around as a helpless little slugcat, the progress you make is almost entirely based on the knowledge you gain. Exploring the unknown is daunting, but full of thrills, failure, and opportunities to learn. Rain World honestly feels like one of the best survival horror games I've played, and I'd highly recommend it if you're willing to give an esoteric adventure game a try.

Minor notes:
• Took me ~23 hours to beat, start to finish. Your time may GREATLY vary based on how you maneuver through the world, or how difficult you find certain areas.
• Maximum resolution of 1366x768, which can look blurry on higher resolution monitors. The PCGW[www.pcgamingwiki.com] page suggests using Peixoto's patch[www.buymeacoffee.com] which is what I used to play at 1080p (protip: only enable "Forced resolution" and "Fix window size", disable everything else), but...
• The game natively supports Dualsense (and presumably DS4, provided you select the preset in the options). However, if you use Peixoto's Patch listed above, it breaks the native Dualsense support, and you'll have to use DS4Windows as well as the Xbox 360 controller preset in the in-game options to restore controller functionality.
[extremely minor movement mechanic spoilers, skip if you would rather discover movement capabilities yourself]
After moving a bit, turn around and jump at the same time to backflip. This is the only way to throw down. Press Down + Left/Right + Jump to slide,
If you can't slide on DPad, you need to set the DPad to emulate a joystick via Big Picture or DS4Windows's profiles.

THE SOUNDTRACK BY ITSELF IS WORTH THE PRICE OF ADMISSION ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ IT'S INSANELY GOOD WTF YOU OWE IT TO YOURSELF IF YOU LIKE MIDI-STYLE MUSIC I CANT BELIEVE ONE OF THE TWO DEVS COMPOSED THE WHOLE THING IT'S ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ BONKERS GOOD

(also the game is crazy fun to play and quite approachable thanks to its earnable continue system and stage select, speaking as someone who's only played Ikaruga and Einhander. it also has a few surprises up its sleeve... give the game a try if you have a passing interest in shmups, or even anime!)

For me, Half-Life 2 remains one of the greatest games of all time ever since I first played it in 2004 on my brother's crappy Gateway desktop, but it's not necessarily because of the game. Half-Life 2, by itself, is an FPS with decent gunplay, fantastic pacing, and a cool gimmick (the Gravity Gun and physics in general), but players revisiting it today may not be so blown away.

Half-Life 2's greatest strength in my book is its legacy. It follows a similar idea to Quake and the original Half-Life in that the engine Half-Life 2 shipped with was and still is extremely moddable. Retail games like Garry's Mod and The Stanley Parable started life as Half-Life 2 mods, but there are other mods like MINERVA, Research and Development, SMOD, Dystopia, NEOTOKYO, Zombie Master, among many, many others (all of this stuff you can still find and play today, provided you don't mind tinkering with some files and folders). This isn't even mentioning Valve-made games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2, or Day of Defeat: Source which started life as mods (whose teams Valve hired), or the plethora of custom skins, animations, and sounds on Gamebanana that gave the base game of Half-Life 2 a fresh experience.

Games now tend to clamp down on modding due to logistical problems, concerns of cheating, desire for curation, or lack of interest. Half-Life 2 was the swan song of the early to mid 2000's modding era, and it'll always be special to me since the game's ending wasn't the end—it was the beginning of the potential that the Source engine had.
