The game depends too heavily on the mechanic that lets you run on walls.

Combat part of the game is great. Options in how you do things thanks to mobility (including running on walls) is really fun. The weapons and mech are well designed. This portion of the game is incredibly well done.

The problem is between combat they go out of their way create excuses to run on walls. Run on walls to go over bad stuff. Run on walls and avoid bad stuff on walls. Move walls so you can run on them. Do other game mechanics exclusively as an excuse to run on walls. They take a fun mechanic and force you do it without any alternative until it becomes a chore.

Fun but flawed game. If you can over look some rough aspects it is worth getting on sale.

Horribly low FOV without any way to increase it.

If I could give it a neutral review I would.

I enjoy running around and doing the parkour stuff. It is a good combination of planning ahead, deciding what options to use, and reacting to the unexpected. To me this is what makes dying light stand out compared to other games. The controls, combat, and pacing of skills/upgrades could be better but it is good enough for me to have fun.

Unfortunately, parkour works best when the buildings are at most 4 to 6 floors high. Anything higher tends to limit your options. You either use the glider thing (avoid parkour), grapple (semi avoid parkour), or you get very specific (yellow) paths without room for planning and creativity. The same can be said of basically all of the towers, windmills, and many story parts within buildings. The game play bogs down with "jumping puzzles" that have already been solved with a yellow path. I was hoping the sequel would get away from this mentality. Because after doing all of the annoying things along the predetermined path there is little sense of fun or accomplishment.

Due to the rails format with most of the story missions I gave up doing it. The story is lacking so it was an easy decision.
Instead I run around and do side tasks or dailies because they let me play in a way that is actually fun.

If there is a 3rd game or major expansion, I'd recommend a couple of things.

1) move all of the jumping puzzles and sky scrapper climbs to "achievements only" with big fancy cosmetic rewards. That way they don't bog down progression. People can do them if the mood strikes.

2) The story missions need more flexibility in how you complete them instead of having a single annoying yellow path. Such as the bandit areas were fun because I could pick and choose how transverse the area and how to attack the leaders.

BTW I appreciate the recent patch that helped reduce motion sickness. Unfortunately some of the cut scenes and in game "extras" still move around like a stumbling drunk. More distracting than immersive.

Has potential but needs work. Game play seems to be go farm some bullet sponge mobs and die repeatedly until you get money to slightly upgrade weapons.

Good game and I'm already looking forward to a co-op play through. However, on single player the last level is the worst designed mess of the entire franchise.

Glory kills (added in the previous game) is the worst thing ever added to the Doom franchise. It is like having the same type of commercial being spammed over and over again that interrupts the actual game play. I wouldn't mind so much if we could completely skip the stupid animations or better yet, not feel obligated to use it for resources. Unfortunately it feels like this game has doubled down on wanting us to use glory kills.

If not for this one distracting mechanic, I would recommend the game to others.

How do you get get so far into a series and still not understand basic quality of life details. Like using the same button to close the map as open it, or allowing us to track multiple quests at the same time.

So far the gameplay is okay.

Being unable to turn off head bob is horrible game design. This alone is why I do not recommend the game.

As for gameplay, if you enjoyed other games in the series then you know what to expect. Yes, it is a repetitive game loop (that I like).

Fun, short game. The first time in the suit running down a hill reminded me of sonic.
