Disappointingly Shallow and Unpolished:
I went into Dragonwilds hoping for a fresh, modern take on the IP. Unfortunately, what I found was an undercooked and uninspired spinoff that feels like it slapped on some RuneScape branding after the fact.

Graphics & Performance:
There’s barely any flexibility in the graphics settings. You’re stuck with depth of field, bloom, and motion blur, regardless of if you want them or not. In 2025 this is a mind boggling choice. The game looks so blurry, even with FSR off at native res. The performance is rough even on decent hardware, which makes the forced visual effects even more frustrating.

Gameplay:
The leveling is shockingly fast and easy, completely stripping away the satisfying grind that’s core to RuneScapes identity. Only a fraction of the skills are present, which makes the whole experience feel hollow. Combat is incredibly basic with just left clicks and a half baked parry system. The new rest mechanic doesn’t help, it’s just another weird decision that doesn’t mesh with anything else.

RuneScape identity?
Besides a couple of familiar NPCs, there’s very little in this game that says “RuneScape”. Visually it looks like a general unreal engine project with RuneScape terms and lore books pasted in. The progression is odd, and nothing about it captures what makes the original games special.

The Silver Lining:
The story and lore can be fun. The devs clearly actually care about the game, but it feels rushed and the inexperience in this genre shows. I still have faith due to how Jagex works, with consistent updates for OSRS on a weekly basis. This game has decent potential.

Final Verdict:
RuneScape: Dragonwilds feels more like a generic survival crafting game with some RuneScape stickers on the box. It’s hard recommend it it’s current state to even longtime fans of the franchise, nevermind completely new players. Here’s hoping Jagex listens to critical feedback amongst the sea of fans blindly rating the game positive, because right now, it’s just not it.
