I really adore this game because they took almost everything that was good about RE7 and some prior games and expanded upon it, starting from the story, down to the gameplay loop. Its all really well done.

We got hands down the best Resident Evil characters in a long time. Everyone felt real, mysterious, and interesting. Not a single character felt fake, everyone was really competently written. The only minor complaint about the characters I have, is I wish we got to learn more about them. I especially appreciate the enthesis on the side characters, Lady Dimitrescu, her daughters, the Duke, and Heisenberg in particular were stand outs for me because of their incredible aura and design.

The environments are extremely detailed and consist throughout the whole game this time around, something which I couldn't say about Resident Evil 7 where the quality fell off after we left the houses. The village was really fun to explore and loot around, but the Castle in particular was simply god tier to me. I hardly remember the last time i enjoyed exploring a location in a game so much as castle Dimitrecu. Its beautiful, intricate, and detailed no matter where i looked. It was so immersive to be there that I was sad when I had to leave. I really wish it was expanded upon further, the castle is gigantic, we got to explore maybe less than half it. This is a common complaint i have with a lot of games. There were so many windows, rooms, towers, and interesting looking places that it saddened me that i couldn't explore more. I really wish Capcom leaned further into the Metroid Vania genre in regards to exploration and maybe even gameplay. We already have a great inventory system. It would've been really fun to find other items that would allow us to open secret rooms or paths and experience more of what this games' various areas have to offer.

The gameplay was fun and it times even tense on the medium difficulty, however it becomes easier the more you invest into your gear, which was something i enjoyed. The enemy variety is actually amazing this time around, I liked basically every single enemy type with maybe the exception of the flying gargoyles. Enemies move around, encircle you, try to anticipate your attacks, and are overall fun to fight. There is a bit of rudimentary stealth system which i thought could've been expanded upon with silenced weapon attachments (no takedowns please). It irks me that we couldn't destroy ANY of the light sources to improve our chances of stealthing through some areas. Such a missed opportunity to add further depth to the otherwise amazing package. I really wish the environments were more interactive and complimentary to the gameplay loop outside of a few braindead explosive red barrels placed around.

The weapons were simply great, amazing even! One of my biggest gripes with RE7 was how there was basically no weapon variety and no way to meaningfully upgrade your weapons either. This game on the other hand nailed it for me. I was also delighted to learn that the merchant system from RE4 has made a come back with improvements. Not only is the Duke an incredible character design, he's also really interesting and charming. I love him. The addition of rudimentary hunting and cooking was also a welcome surprise. I think the Duke was a stroke of former genius, I enjoyed everything the Duke had to offer. Also the fact that he canonically is friends with the Merchant from RE4 was great too~

The story was great, well written and interesting throughout. I loved every second of every character I saw on screen, everyone looked so charming and interesting. Glad to see Chris return and get a lot of screen time this time around, however I wish he was a little more developed as some his plot points felt underdeveloped me. Like why did he not tell us about Mia being an Imposter Miranda from the start? Though, I guess that added to the mystery of portraying him as a mysterious bad guy. Rose, I really did not expect Rose to get kidnapped a chopped up into pieces, as if we're making a stew. I thought she was gone and it was over for her. The ending was great, final boss fight wasn't too hard thanks to all of the upgrades you can buy at the merchant, maybe a little simple but it did the job. I did not expect Ethan to die. After the post credits scene I thought it would be awesome to see Rose grownup and maybe teased as the next main character for RE9. To my surprise, a cutscene started playing and I saw exactly what I was hoping for. Rose looks beautiful and cool at the same time. I'm really happy we also seemingly got to see Ethan come back at the very end too. I'm super incited for the next mainline RE game, I hope we get to play as rose and explore maybe a different kind of gameplay loop and story.

To sum up, we have a truly amazing game that's well written, lovingly crafted, well balanced, and arguably more polished than most modern games these days. have very little to complain about outside of a few technical issues and design choices. Really worth to play if you are a fan of action horror games. I could go more into detail about the things that irked me but i was minor things in the end and I felt the package overall is great where those annoyances do not detract from the experience. Play this game.

Hi, short and sweet: this game has severe problems that the devs are refusing to acknowledge or to fix. Many things got downgraded since 1896 Update are yet to be fixed or added back close to a year after the big update. The amount of issues will give a frustrating experience, especially if your system is lower/mid range as the game is poorly optimized and blurry.

My suggestion? At the current update pace and lack of important improvements asked by the community, wait for maybe another year or if not more. It games deserves a lot of the bad reviews it gets.

Right of the bat I can say that Black Plague is a big improvement Overture, I mean over Overture (ik sush)

First things first, the overall graphical fidelity got a nice bump. The level of detail got a nice improvement, especially in smaller places like lab rooms. Other than that, there's a few new options in video settings menu.

The story is a lot better than it was in Overture. I was actually interested and somewhat excited to know how it ends. Black Plague also has a lot more voice acting which really helps the story when you're too lazy to read notes and emails.

The AI isn't the best nor is it the worst, I'd say it's in-between. Unlike in some other games I've played. Enemies can easily walk arround corners and all sort of geometry without a problem.

I did encounter quit a nasty graphical glitch which span throughout the entire final portion of the game. Though it wasn't anything game breaking and it might've been caused by running an old game on somewhat more recent hardware.

Now for the overall most significant improvement - the scare factor. Ranging from the enemies to the sound design, everything recieved a solid improvement. Unlike Overture, Black Plague has encounters that actually managed to scare me, though a select few encounters were annoying more than anything. They also decided to remove weapons from the game, thus making it more horror oriented. No longer will you be able to shove that broom up the spiders asses.

There's probably a bunch more I could mention, though considering the already astronomically low chance of people even bothering to read this review, I'll say this - *Insert the part with that cheeky a$$ computer asking if you want to start the security protocol or not*

Short? Yes, but for 2 bloody euros the penumbra bundle this is the best bundle I bought this year.

The graphics are heavly dated, though at certain places the lighting does impress. All of the light sources are full dynamic. At some places the textures are also quite okay. Other than that there isn't much else to say.

The story is... at the vey least, interesting. There isn't much more I can tell without spoiling it.

In terms of scare factor, the game relies heavily on the atmosphere. I'd say Penumbra: Overture is creepy and unsettling more than it is scary or terrifying, but it did have it's moments.

Considering this is a game from 2007 made by, at the time, a bunch of nobudy's, it's a well made horror game that mangess to impress on it's own.

If you're a fan of slow-paced, story driven horror games with puzzles and see the Penumbra bundle on sale, GET IT.

For everyone with the wierd audio issue in the main menu! Here's how to fix it:

Download the lastest Rapture3D audio driver from here:
http://www.blueripplesound.com/get-update
And install it;

Then go to: Documents\My Games\DiRT3\hardwaresettings and open hardware_settings_config.xml with notepad, press ctr+f and search for <audio mixing="Software" /> , then replace Software with Rapture3D , save the file.

Done.

(In the GFWL version the audio driver came bundled with the game, but for some reason it was removed from the non-GFWL version)

Besides this little problem the games is great ;)
