This is a computer software. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. It is encrusted with beautiful UI changes, pixel graphics and music. It depicts a simulation of a f*cked up world.

I am a new DF player but have been watching DF content for a while. Have tried to play it once but got stuck on how to assign jobs to my dwarfs. I consider myself a hard core gamer and have experience with bad UI and steep learning curves, since i play a lot of older games. I will update this review as I go through learning the game to see how the changes effected the on-boarding process.

If you enjoy Tarkov or like people having vastly better or worse gear than others in a multiplayer game then this game is for you! I love hunt showdown which is a similar game. Only in hunt, if i meet an other player, i know i can kill them, even if they have the best gear money can buy. the weapons are still going to be deadly, just harder to use or slightly worse. In this game they chose an other way to go about it. If you got common weapons vs someone wearing a uncommon shield (body armor) you are going to do peanuts. You better get the first shot of AND outplay them. This is simply not fun for me. I love doing low quality runs in hunt showdown, i cant even stomach playing low gear in this game. I never know if it was my skill that allowed me to get a kill or if i die. Only when i see the enemies gear can i determine if it was even a fair fight to begin. That being said, the PVE is severely lacking. There are maybe 4 creature types i have encountered in my 6ish hours in the game. The melee combat is tacky and inefficient. so either you run past the enemies or shoot and risk getting player attention. Personally i like that you have to either avoid the local wildlife or make noise. It means traversing the map is all about stamina management and knowing when you can or cannot engage PVE. Monetization is everywhere. Every aspect of this game screams to you to spend money or to log in every day to get rewards. quickly making me feel like i was back at work and not trying to relax and play a videogame, especially the ingame quest system made me feel that way. There is a hint of a good game here. The gunplay itself actually seems pretty fun. To bad you will never know if you won because of skill or gear until you extract.

As you can see by my hours played... I like this game! I refer to this game as DIGITAL CRACK.

The first hit is free, but you'll soon want to buy the DLC (the standard set of animals is the best and most balanced, more on that later!) and spend every waking moment playing it. You will wonder where hours of your life went. You'll forget what your family looks like. Its cute, got a lot of depth for such a simple game and has the right amount of engagement that it keeps hitting those dopamine dispensers... You could play for a game or play for hours. Just. One. More. Game. It's never enough for my brain! Every time i hit end turn i have to sit there and rock back and forth like an addict just to see if i survived. Almost every turn is a frantic gamble to get what i need faster than others. The battle is fun to watch because almost every turn is a Greek drama unfolding before you. You'll scream of joy, wail tears of sadness but most of all you'll silently seethe and wish a thousand deaths upon who ever destroyed your team that was one turn away from popping off.

Every time i thought i was about to quit, i understood a mechanic better, every time i thought something was OP or broken i found ways around it.

That being said i still think the game needs a LOT of fine-tuning and balancing. A LOT of people will run the same type of build because its easy to understand and play while other builds require a lot of luck and skill. More animals and builds should be viable, more animals should have different or more interesting abilities when leveling up, more ways to mitigate pure RNG with educated guesses the likes of a seasoned gambler, The way things resolve should make more logical sense or be explained better, the wording on abilities could be written better.

The game is fun however, not despite the things in the previous paragraph but sometimes *because* of it! When you get the perfect roll and the sun moon and the whole freaking solar system line up... it feels soooooo freaking good.

The game is good and on the cusp of being a great classic, an industry trendsetter for auto-battlers. Because other auto-battlers are sometimes hard to follow, hard to know what actually went wrong. When in Super Auto Pets your scaling 4/5 kangaroo got sniped by a dolphin that deals 5 dmg to lowest hp animal, you KNOW why you lost. When you run a summon build and play against AOE, you KNOW why you lost. If your 2/2 pig died to a 2/3 fish, you KNOW why you lost! it's easy to quantify, to see the numbers go up or down but it's hard to master. Like any great game.

Do you like slay the spire? Then you will enjoy returning the pyre in this game. The things i think this game does better than slay the spire: artifacts and upgrades are waaay more powerfull, meaning you can make an OP deck every run with some skill whereas in slay the spire i feel like most of it comes down to luck and making the best of a situation. that by no means the game is easy. It has 25 'ascention levels' (not what it is called in game but that is basically what they are) and it gets difficult fast. Every odd couple of battles you can accept various challenges to the fights, which if you survive you gain huge amounts of benefits, but can be very deadly if you do not asses your deck correctly. Every second you are making choices. From what clan you start with, to upgrading spells or units to should i take damage to potentially have a better deck in the future. the game is FULL of meaningfull choices. It also has a speedrun mode where you can challenge random people or friends, in getting the most points, the fastest. which i think is a neat addition. There are also many cool mutators that change the game completely if you want something fresh. The things i think it does worse than slay the spire: enemy variety. the bosses and enemies are pretty much the same every run with some rule variations . Gameplay wise this is perfectly acceptable since you know what is coming and is part of the skill of the game, but i am sure that is something people will not find attractive. I have no problem with this personally.
Things that make it different from slay the spire: it is more about building your engine than it is playing a card game, but that is exactly why i love it. It is a fresh new take on deckbuilding games. It still has a lot of combo building that you know and love from StS but focuses on units. If you like engine building games or tower defense games AND deckbuilding roguelikes... this game is for you!

Edit: 80 ish hours further into the game: this game gets better the more covenants you have! i litterally cannot believe it is getting better over time like a fine wine.

"You find a strange but beautiful gem, it whispers of stories, beautiful murals and managing clans and gods alike. will you; leave it, pass it to an other clan or enrich yourself in the world of Glorantha? you could always ask one of your ring members for advice! (thats me!)"

From the makers of "the king of dragon pass". "A sharp" made an other great make your own story game in the wonderfully wierd world of Glorantha. We've got our duck people, our loving Gods and spirits that need sacrifices and quests, feuding clans and of course our 7 clan ring members with sometimes questionable advice. This time we are playing a 1000 years before dragon pass. Our former brothers are now reduced to being called "ram people" as we play as the "horse people". Not many people will hear of this game, but if you like games where you make your story, the likes of Kenshi, Caves of Qud, Crusader kings (other less known but amazing games.) or any paper RPGs. Try this game! it has beautiful art and amazing compelling storytelling while also scratching that management itch. The game is available on iOS and will be released on android later this year. Glorantha even has it's very own paper RPG!

TL;DR: Kenshi a brutal squad based storytime game where you play as nobody special and require patience to become someone. A rough but unique game.

Kenshi is a diamond in the rough. It has more love, charm, atmosphere, passion, mechanics, uniqueness and (minor) bugs than a tripple A title. The best way to discribe Kenshi is that it's like a dream. You write and experience your dream at the same time. You are the creator of the story yet you are surprized by it.

Therefor this game is for people who love storytelling. The game has no plot but it has plenty of stories. I for one, got beat up for protecting my alien friend from a squad of racist paladins. I swore to Ruka... we would build a place where everyone would be accepted. Soon people from far and wide joined our cause. Escaped servants, poor people, the crazy and eccentric... but all had hands to build, to fight, to survive and eventually thrive.

However this game is not for everyone. You need to have patience. You are nothing special in kenshi, you are worth less than the dirt on your boots, if you can afford boots... You have the potential to be someone but humans are weak their only strenght is their brains and their culture...Strenght in numbers that is. You have none of that to start. You won't be anyone without falling and getting up. You won't be a strong fighter without losing fights, you won't become a silent thief without getting caught, you won't become a sharpshooter without friendly fire....

This is what I love about this game. It is hard as nails and usually I savescum when it comes to these types of games because the price of failure would be too high. Not in this game. You need to fail, it's ingrained into it's gameplay loop. It requires you to fail and gives you the tools to deal with it. You wil get hurt, but bandages are cheap, you will get caught, but escape is not impossible, you will get hungry but you can get meat/vegetables in various ways. It doesn't punish you for failing, it rewards it. Which adds to the story time feel. It's a real rags to riches type of game. From a worm that nobody cares about to the king of the desert or more realisticly from bearly surviving to surviving.

This game was one of the first to be greenlit on steam 12 years ago. I still see it growing for 12 more. If not from the developers then from the community. This game is a hidden gem. Find some streamer/youtuber who plays it and see for yourself if this is a game for you!
