The game is always online, you don't have the option to play single player without joining an online lobby, your only way to play solo is to set the session to "invite only".
If you lose connection to Nebula's servers (which you will) you will be kicked out of the session even if you are the only person in it, losing any progress you made except weapon challenge progress.

Go play Crime Boss Rockay City instead of this ♥♥♥♥
