It seems more like a proof of concept, or an early access build, despite now being years old. It seems pretty all over the place with ideas, balancing, themes etc. In some ways this creates variety, keeps the game fresh and helps the game in a lot of ways. But hurts it in just as many, especially with balancing and power creep. Hopefully ARK 2 provides a more polished, and well rounded experience. Still enjoyable to those willing to put in time. Not worth the price tag normally, but on sale or for free (which it is currently) it's a much easier sell in my opinion.

Was also quite nostalgic since I grew up loving dinosaurs, but lost interest as time went on. So coming back to ARK reignited that interest in some ways.
