Early Access Review
this game's weapon simulation is so good that whenever i have a pistol in take and hold and i hit a wall it sometimes racks the slide and ejects a round.

Recommending this only because you can play with bots without any internet connection and the gameplay is INCREDIBLE

but there's a few issues with it right now:
- Monetization is super aggressive and progression is slow as a result (343 will apparently address this in a future update)
- Custom Game files are 100% online and extra overrides do not apply to saved game modes
- Loading a saved custom game mode will crash the game

The definitive version of QUAKE that adds many new things to the original. Although not as moddable as its prior source ports, this version is perfect for users who just started playing Quake, or coming back in for a refresher. Not only does this include the original QUAKE, but all expansions as well. This even includes additional episodes created by MachineGames, creators of the modern Wolfenstein series. These episodes are far better than Wolfenstein II and Youngblood, if you're wondering.

Overall, this is a very good starter package for those who want to get a modernized version of Quake running without any additional modifications.

However do keep a couple of things in mind:
- As this uses the KEX Engine framework, this version is currently not open source under the GPL, much like the original WinQuake, GLQuake, and QuakeWorld. Time will tell if this causes legal issues. As Bethesda and Nightdive have the license to the source code, they don't have to abide by the GPL and release it. However, it would be highly suggested they open source the code, alongside the ports for DOOM, DOOM II, and DOOM 64, to stay with tradition.

- If you wish to apply mods and maps to this port, you can. Some limits have been adjusted so the MachineGames episodes would work well. However, some mods may not work properly, especially if they were created under QuakeWorld. In addition you will have to mess around with the q64 and id1 folders for some mods to work properly, as I've documented in this Twitter thread: https://twitter.com/BitlBlox/status/1428800936676184066
With most maps and mods, however, mods will work fine here, but won't be detected unless you modify a json file in the pak0.pak file.

I would highly suggest going for a source port if you can, however. The modding process is much less stressful than what I described in the Twitter post. I recommend QuakeSpasm (and QuakeSpasm-Spiked), FTEQW, and DarkPlaces. I hope that mod support is expanded on in future updates, much like how WAD support was added into the DOOM and DOOM II ports. This remaster is moddable, but there are some considerations to take into account when installing them.

EDIT: One detail I forgot to add is that this remaster is the very first version of QUAKE to release on consoles in years. If you have a Playstation, Xbox or Switch, this is an excellent game for those consoles.

thank god i never contributed to this ♥♥♥♥ show when i was invited to work on it.

yes, i was invited to work on it by the project's creator. i told them i was busy and never went back.

EDIT: 4-21-22: if you really want to play this, play the M3SA beta build. A massive improvement over the original version.

Note: This goes over the launch-day version of the MCC where you could only play Halo Reach. When something changes I will update this review.

Despite the port having a few flaws (no advanced quality options, audio mixing issues in the campaign, poor latency in the campaign, stuttering at unlocked framerates, use key takes a long time to hold, questionable default bindings, and you cannot change the push to talk or chat buttons as of right now), I consider this probably the best PC Halo since Eldewrito. Controls feel tight on KB&M, you can adjust the FOV to Quake-ish levels (120!!), and the game runs incredibly smoothly on my 144hz monitor with unlimited FPS enabled. It is very a well optimized port and I'm very excited to see how the rest of the Halo series transfer to PC.

You've done good, 343.

Fantastic 1930's art style mixed with fantastic platformer-styled gameplay. I reccomend a controller if you want to play this.

GOTY material for me.
