I'm afraid my knowledge is pretty limited as well, especially when it comes to bypassing anything. I heavily doubt I would find more success than you. Have you tried contacting the original developer? I'm sure his email is floating out around there somewhere.
There's also AssetStudio. If the game is based on the Unity Engine (which it probably is), you might be able to rip game files from it using this tool. github dot com/aelurum/AssetStudio
I'm not sure whether you could find anything of use using this tool, but it's something.
