What a rollercoaster finding this in my library was.

Having spent a not insubstantial portion of my life 100%ing Faerie Solitaire, I'm no stranger to pointless stressful grind in a freecell/solitaire game, so was initially keen to spend many hours progressing through the game's relatively impressive world map. However, discovering some of the design choices has made me immensely regret committing my overall Steam completion percentage to this game. The introduction of a health bar and attacks being countered by intentionally making bad moves and then spamming the back button can't have been the intended mechanic, but I just can't see any other way this is supposed to work. It makes the game so unnecessarily stressful, and turns it into even more of a game of chance than it already is. The idea of having randomised levels until you solve them also means that the difficulty scaling is all messed up - some of the hardest levels I played were right at the start of the game with one freecell and no in game currency. Also this may upset freecell purists, but keeping in the rule where you can only move as many cards in a stack as there are free spaces in my opinion was a terrible decision. Especially in the beginning of the game this makes it unnecessarily difficult and based on reviews seems to put a lot of people off. Another strange choice is having the points on the map that have already been completed become "unsolved", due to being retaken by enemy forces, resulting in the player having to redo the level again. There's nothing more demoralising after spending all of your gold to overcome the health bar mechanic and beat a level, to then travel back through that town 10 minutes later and have to completely redo it.

I was so incredibly excited for this game when I saw it in my library; I thought it might actually have succeeded in merging freecell with another genre and adding in new interesting mechanics. Unfortunately, it's just frustrating, stressful freecell with some meaningless gradually increasing numbers and a nice world map.

It's so dumb and so stupid but it's such a great group experience, nothing tests true friendship like being decapitated then pissed on.

The one bad thing about the previous GoI game was the servers being empty so it taking forever to get into a match - adding AI to the game was the best possible decision Muse could have made. This is one of my favourite games of all time and now I don't need to force my friends to play it with me to be able to enjoy it.
