Was a cool game - then sold their soul to Paradox. No longer a cool game...

Saves a lot of time farting around with settings if your monitor is not a great match for your GPU. In my case, I have a 4k monitor with a GPU not always up to rendering in 4k, but can run most titles maxed out in 1k or 2k. So I launch the game windowed, use this app to upscale to 4k and looks MUCH better than running a 1k game at full screen.

Wish I'd bought it earlier...

One of the most underrated survival games on Steam in my unpopular opinion - and have played more than my fair share of survival games being my favourite genre.

I've only played Homestead - which is the single player version of this game, so cannot speak for the MP version - and perhaps where a lot of the negative reviews come from.

So much detail in this game - and the crafting trees are insanely large. After 50 hours, I am still only scratching the surface of what can be unlocked and crafted. You can spend hours in your comparatively small starting grid before feeling any need to venture further afield - unless you want to of course. In my 50 hours, I've probably not seen more than 10% of the map so far. There are a few starting scenarios and locations to choose from in Homestead - and a lot of customisation options to tweak to your preferred game pace, but have yet to even explore anything other than my initial default starting game "In the Hills".

You can build, upgrade, craft, hunt, fish, cook, sew, smith, mill, grow, farm animals, explore, mine, marry, have kids, furnish your homes - and collect vast arrays of ingredients and raw materials of varying quality - so to make decent money (to buy more land), you're going to need to specialise and craft / grow or mine these better quality ingredients.

Kind of like Stardew Valley... Except I don't recall ever waking up for your morning bowel movement, only to be chased around by an angry bear or a pack of white wolves in SV. Death can come unexpectedly in this game.

The world is so full of detail in so many ways, it will tax any PC - perhaps another reason for poor reviews - but even if it was finely optimised, this game is going to require lots of VRAM and GPU power. Plenty of graphics options to explore if 30-40fps hurts too much. The world is so beautiful, I prefer to lose a few fps and enjoy the scenery and accept that it's going to stutter now and then.

The game has a lot of quirks and charm - but also comes with a few bugs. Nothing game breaking, and if it were, it keeps enough back-ups to roll back a day or two. The game fails to explain a lot of stuff, so you'll either dig online for help or try figure out mechanics, which for me can be part of the fun.

I'm usually too lazy to do reviews - but this game just feels a bit unfairly unloved, and the devs deserve some credit for the crazy scope of what they are trying here.

If you're a seasoned survival game player, and your PC is good enough - no reason you won't love this game too. Price is good even without discount - but if not sure, then grab when on sale - it's a steal.

A game I feel slipped under the radar a little. If you like management/building sims, no reason you won't like this.
Devs have listened and fixed the minor irritations and latest patch introduces the much awaited camera rotation.

This not really a review, just a quick thumbs up as the game deserves it.

Early Access Review
Got this game on sale, not expecting much because of the reviews.

But - I'm guessing the negative experiences are because of MP problems, as SP is very, very good. I like ARK for SP and this is even better. Perhaps the devs aren't too worried about steam ratings, because I think ARK also had a shaky start, but people keep on playing it, and I'm hoping this will eventually become as popular.

Even if not on sale, it's good value as a SP game - at least it has been for me.
(I cannot speak for multiplayer gameplay)

Am loving this game.

Too lazy to do a full review right now, but just wanted to point out not to take the review scores on face value alone.

It's like XCOM2 - and also it isn't. It has many common features to the XCOM series, but there is a fundamental shift in combat. It's turn-based, as is XCOM, but it has dropped the RNG elements making for a very different combat experience. At first play, you might go charging in as you might with similar games, but this game requires a lot more thought, stealth and caution. I nearly gave up on it after a few hours, and then changed my approach. And then it gets really good!

It's because of this fundamental shift that I believe has caused some review damage - with many claiming the game is broken. It really isn't, just takes a new mind set to get to grips with combat. It's not without a few flaws I'm sure - and the devs are active in improving the game further, but they are losing the battle against those expecting to play the same way they are used to.

A lot of depth, great graphics and performance - definitely recommended!

Simply put, this game is not as good as the developers think it is - and nowhere near as good as the current price might suggest.

I got this for about $20 on the original EA release (regional pricing + EA Discount) in May 2017. The game is currently selling for 3x that price, or 4x if you include the Season Pass. (DLC and Season Pass were never mentioned when this game was initially launched in EA)

Fraught with controversy since Gearbox Publishing got involved, the only defence from Compulsion Games, is that the game is going to be great... There was massive community backlash from those sceptical, disbelieving that Gearbox could actually add anything of value, and the ratings dropped overnight to "very negative" based on the news. It was saved by Valve's new "review bombing" measures, meaning a month later it shot back up "positive", even though the game had been removed for sale until release. So there are many, many negative reviews that are not included. Despite some very heated discussions, and some shocking comments and passive aggressiveness from devs and white knight fans, I decided at the time to stay out of the way and wait the extra months that were added to the release date to see for myself.

The only really good thing about the game is the aesthetics: the art style, the beautiful world and the "Clockwork Orange" or "Bioshockish" theme. The promising start was fully capitalised with massive marketing, fake hype and MS punting it at E3.

But... bugs aside - and there are so many, including game breaking bugs, the game is all just rather dull.

It is partly a stealth game, but it's just so lame. For example - you can be in a room with enemies trying to attack, and standing right in front of them, you can climb in to an air duct with them looking at you and they all wonder where you have gone.

It's partly a combat game - but again, there are just so many games that does combat so much better.

It has good voice acting, and the story might be good - but I find I have to go back to a save from hours ago, just to complete a major quest that is broken. So it will be a grind of re-runs just to see the story out as it currently stands.

There's so much more wrong with the game, including massive performance issues, dull run and fetch quests, diabolical AI, and although the game looks so good, the world really just feels sterile. Maybe these issues will get fixed, but with such a long delay from the initial release date, the state of the game really is well below par.

I may come back and change my review if they address these issues, but I don't hold up much hope. Compulsion Games no doubt sold out - perhaps for massive financial return but at big damage to their reputation. The target audience are gaming newbies that fell for the hype, that might be fooled into thinking this really is a AAA game and must be great because of the price.

Seasoned gamers will just be disappointed.

As it stands - wait for it to be bundled or for a very deep sale. Maybe it's worth $10 in it's current state - but nowhere near worth it's current asking price.

UPDATE: 6 weeks later and still no patch. Guess they are busy getting the DLC out... Nobody is playing it, so not sure why they are even bothering.

I would have waited for this game to be completed before a review - but too late for that now - it's been abandoned, and will be removed from the store 24 May 2018. The game is not complete - but don't let that put you off - there is a strong fan base that will keep it alive with the workshop, so If you want an affordable way to learn to fly grab it before it's gone forever.

There were probably many mistakes made during the development of this - we'll probably never know the full story, but in my opinion, the fault is not with the developers, but with a few poor business decisions, and a toxic steam community that tried to destroy it before it was even out of the gate.

Make no mistake - building a decent flight sim is no small undertaking - and it was always a risky move to try and push forward a genre that simply does not have a massive fan base. Development was slow - but that was because it was a small but dedicated team that were really interactive with their audience and were willing to try new things. This game should not have been abandoned. Even as it stands, it is a beautiful sim. I honestly cannot go back to FSX as it just looks so ugly and dated compared to this. I have just tried XP-11. Again, I found myself wanting the realism and immersion that this sim brings.

Graphics are beautiful - even though there are some things that will never get completed - some weather effects make the ground look a little whitewashed. It's occasional, and not a big deal. There are no jets that would have eventually come. Night lights will never get completed, so taxiing at night will forever remain a challenge - and IFR is not 100% complete, and never will be.

The aircraft models are some of the best ever produced.

This sim was always going to take a while to complete and they started with a grand base - it would have been excellent if ever finished.

I guess early access was a gamble for this - and perhaps contributed to it's demise. Some of the initial versions released were desperately buggy, and visually not up to scratch. This created some negativity and poor reviews, and ultimately poor sales. I'd given it a rest for a few months, and after a number of updates climbed back in and was blown away. It's immersive, authentic and gorgeous in 4k.

Dovetails reputation in the gaming community did not do it any favours - and abandoning this will only make their reputation worse. But - and I think a lot of people don't get this - the games they produce have a limited audience - fishing, flight, train sims etc, do not have a big following - so for a low price you get the base game - which many will never get in to, but those that do, don't mind paying a few extra bucks to keep the sim going - and get hours of additional entertainment. It's simply not fair to compare the DLC policies of niche games like this to mainstream games that have millions of fans, and no reason for exploitative DLC practices.

I have nearly 50 hours and am only 50% complete with the missions. I still have many, many hours of entertainment value left in this - and I have only glanced at the (incomplete) career mode.

I'm glad I own this, and there is a part of me that hopes that somehow, somewhere this will be rescued.

Seriously - even though the sim will never be 100% complete - it is worth it even at it's full current price. I'm going to grab a few more DLCs before it's gone forever. If you have a half decent rig, and enough intrigue in flight simulation - grab this before it's gone for good. (Maybe the price will drop before 24 May...)

The mission pack is great. Some well thought out scenic routes, nice cold start checklists, and a little trivia when flying over interesting spots.

There are a few legs you have to fly with a broken transponder - meaning you have to fly low enough to avoid controlled airspace, leading to some interesting and hair-raising moments to avoid mountains!

Of course, it's not without a few bugs, but whether that's to do with the mission pack or general FSW bugs, I'm not sure.

I'm not going to discuss DTG's DLC practises or the cost of additional content whilst essentially still in Beta as we all have opinions on that, but for the price less than a cheap pizza, you get a lot of interesting flying time. No regrets giving up that pizza!
