aside from the final third or so of the game, this was such a good experience. even though i enjoyed village, i still wish it was more like this game. hopefully 9 will be similar

good for you if you loved it, but man is it disappointing. i really dislike the direction they took with this one and hopefully bioware can wake up from the backlash.

after finishing origins, 2 and inquisition back to back to back last month and liking them a lot (origins and 2 mostly, inquisiton was okay), i thought i could ignore the problems that i've heard about this one and enjoy it to SOME extent but i found that it's genuinely very difficult to do that. it's an okay game at best on its own, but it's a disaster for a dragon age game.

the dialogue is genuinely atrocious in every facet imaginable. i thought people were exaggerating about the writing, but they really aren't and that's baffling. this feels like a kidz bop spinoff of dragon age, it's an absolute insult to the franchise and it's really depressing. i think everyone and their mothers have heard about the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ writing so i won't say more.

the combat's probably the best thing about it, yet it still isn't that great. enemies are spongy as ♥♥♥♥, movement and camera feel sluggish as ♥♥♥♥ (worse than inquisition somehow), completely unplayable on KB+M, this game LOVES taking away control from the player it sucks ass. class variety sucks, companions can't die and barely get aggro from enemies, combat UI is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mess, but hey! at least the effects are cool !!!! it's a real shame they took the full action game route. I know tactical combat doesn't sell as well (this statement irks me to no end, but this is 100% the reason why they decided this), but to me, that, well written characters and good, impactful choices are what made dragon age dragon age. this game has none of those things.

side note since it's a big topic when it comes to this game: representation is fine, i encourage it but it HAS to be executed better. the representation in this game almost feels like a caricature of the groups they're representing. I'm not part of the LGBTQ community or anything, i'm just a straight dude, but i feel like if i was, i'd be insulted with how they did ♥♥♥♥ in this game. if you're gonna be so hellbent on adding representation in your game, WRITE THE CHARACTERS AROUND IT, NOT MAKE IT THEIR WHOLE THING.

I dont normally write reviews but i feel like i have to after finishing this for the first time ever just now. Despite all the flaws: all the long and tedious sections, the insane random difficulty spikes and bugs, I had such a fantastic time. It saddens me how much they butchered this series with the Veilguard, completely unrecognisable.

If you're a fan of good writing, fantastic characters and can overlook some jankiness, I fully recommend this game.

It's a family-friendly, girlfriend-making simulator. I really learned a lot of things for how to speak to a girl which is a skill i have never learned in my life.
