Early Access Review
Smite remastered, easier to get to grips of and therefore more fun to play. Got an ungodly amount of hours in Smite 1 and this game feels better to play. RIP Smite 1 you will be uninstalled after beta is finished for Smite 2

Smite, oh Smite.

I started down the rabbit hole of this 3rd person perspective MMO in 2015, after being the only nerd in my group of friends who had not built their own PC, and had not been introduced to the madness that is the battle ground of the gods. Since I first made my way into conquest premade ques (we miss you), and the beautiful old joust map (i miss you more), during the middle of season 2 I have had an up and down relationship with the game and HiRez studios.

To start, god balance. The balance team do what they want, end of story. The community including actual pro players and streamers can complain and highlight the issues with particular gods and it can go ignored for months, and even years. Some might speculate that this due to the mass amount of meta conformity in this game, which then encourages the devs to implement new skins that cost a decent amount money to buy, which any ten year old faced with anime boobies will do, resulting in the lack of motivation to nerf certain gods due to the mass amount of players that have bought into using said god for the majority of their games. This becomes very problematic and stagnates the meta of Smite, making it less interesting for those who would like to depart from the 10 god meta of conquest, 20 god meta of joust, and 5 god meta of duel, and especially makes ranked play uninviting to new players.

However if you are willing to depart from sticking to what the invasive meta dictates during casual play, you can have quite a lot of fun in a group of friends for a good few hours, however if you are trying to get into competitive play, don't play with your friends, Smites MMR calculator cannot handle the requirement for proper balanced matchmaking if you are a gold MMR player, and your friend is a Diamond MMR player, and my group has come to accept that.

Our rate of play in this game has declined over the years, the lack of proper item balance in season 4-5 really put a dent in our enjoyment of the game. On a personal note i would like there to be less emphasis on selling skins to the most played gods, and perhaps the further balancing of certain gods (King Arthur) to make comp play less tedious and more competitive. Used to be a 9/10 season 2, 7/10 season 3, 5/10 season 4-5, currently season 6 is a 7/10, but we'll see what the mid split patch brings.

I like the game just like i liked chiv, it has a diverse selection of weapons and play styles, including good enough bows to keep first person shooters happy, and builders that can be useful if they're not a troll. The clash system added greatly improves game play, and transforms the genre from a rock paper scissors fight, into a fluid form of combat. If you're looking for a laugh with friends as well as competitive play its great.

The maps are a little limited, but the game is new so time will tell if the updates from the devs are going to be worth the months long wait or not maps wise. So weapons need balancing like with every game, the meta dictates was neck beards will play with, but in frontline you can get away with pretty much anything. My major issue with the game is the way drags and stabs are displayed as it is impossible to tell what the opponents character is doing when they matrix spin around when dragging the weapon, leading to pretty stupid interactions just short of the ridiculous rainbow flicking that drove a lot of chivs player base away.

Has great potential, may need less 'loose' combat if they're hoping to get a solid consistent player base to sustain the game before players get bored after 2 hours of getting stomped by lvl 60+. 7/10

Knock back mechanic when being hit against a wall is dumb. if you want to play passive to collect stuff early and get all the buffs for your equiptment, forget it. Game rewards agressive players way to much, and defencive items in the game are just too weak to be viable. Arrow combat is literally just based on who draws first wins, super boring and frustrating.

Game probs will get better over time, it is early acess after all, but I really dislike it in its current state. Maybe wait until its released in full before you buy.
