If Hyper Light Drifter and CrossCode had a baby, this would be it, and it's very good. For fans of either game or general metroid/zelda-like gameplay, check this out. A real labor of love.

This game is fan-♥♥♥♥♥♥♥-tastic. I've played a lot of metroidvanias in my time, some of them great, some forgettable. But this one is extremely memorable and an amazing effort that stands toe-to-toe with kings like Hollow Knight. It oozes atmosphere and unique graphics, and the ending sequence is really something that is going to stick with you for awhile

One of the most important things for Metroidvanias to get right is: a) make swinging sword fun, b) make jumping not suck. It nails both these, platforming feels fluid, forgiving, and not hard., Swinging swords feels meaty and packs punches. Unfortunately a lot of games fail at either A) and/or B) but this one doesn't. Did I mention it looks great? Because yeah, it looks great.

There are some minor glitches but it doesn't detract from an extremely unique experience. Any metroidvania fan really needs to check this out because it's truly an unique experience with a very carefully crafted world and really unique plot.

Early Access Review
Solid roguelite in the vein of Ziggurat, Immortal Redneck, Risk of Rain 2, etc with a strong metaprogression element. Really slick gunplay, lots of zany and OP builds you can reach for, good flow. The gameplay/item/weapon side feels pretty fully fleshed out and 100% complete; the biggest problem at the moment is it really needs some more biomes/levels/bosses/enemy variety.

Absolutely one of the best AAA games from the last 5 years without reservation, top 5 even.

Very fun, well-priced, and addicting roguelite with a Zelda Link to the Past aesthetic where you battle your way through floors/bosses/etc collecting randomized artefacts and power-ups making some insane OP builds and building around drops. There's a huge plethora of metaprogression upgrades into unlockable familiars, upgrading your pickaxe damage/throws/armors/potion slots/etc etc. If you liked games like Spelunky, Dead Cells, Enter the Gungeon, Nuclear Throne, Immortal Redneck, Rogue Legacy, etc, you'll like this. It may not be super innovative on the roguelite-metaprogression formula itself, but it's gorgeous, very well polished, and very slick.

And so, so, so many moments of "OH FOR F--- SAKE THAT WAS A BS DEATH ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥! ok ok ok chill out... one more run... this is my last one i promise I've got this down I'm gunna do it this time"

*6 hours laters its 3AM*

"ok just one more run i really gotta sleep since i have work tomorrow.... totally got it this time i swear....."

Really great chill co-op shoot-bugs and mine game. Devs are constantly adding content at a blazing pace, and truly is early access done right. It's already in a highly-finished state and totally playable for many dozens of hours. Highly recommend.

It's a game that will draw a lot of Stardew Valley comparisons (for a lot of reasons, some of them valid, some of them not) and it's not really comparable. I would say it's an even chiller SV, but shallower. There's always something to do, and it's great to put on a podcast, zone out, and just do stuff without any real time-pressure since everything repeats on a week-basis instead of seasonal. At the end of the day, it's a busy-work game that I really enjoyed, I think if someone is looking for just a chill game to mine, fish, farm, do quests, it's definitely a solid choice and highly recommended. If someone is looking for more an actual build-out-our-farm and focus on farming and growing your operation, it's probably not going to satisfy them.

I hesitantly recommend it, it does a lot of N64-era things well but also doesn't ask "should we still be doing this??". I loved Banjo games as a kid and this nails the asthetic and music, but really misses out on opportunities to improve and brings it down several notchs. Levels feel both too disorienting and relatively un-fulfilling, the new camera is great but ohh boy when you flying or are underwater its bad, and when its bad its really godawful-I-want-to-quit-bad. Flight controls really should have been a lot better and easily adds a very sour note in the latter parts of the game.

Overall I would say its not worth $40 or even close, but for anyone who wants a fun charming Banjo game in 2017 with a bunch of nostalgia flair then pick it up for $15 easily.
