I adore this game
By far one of my favorite games to ever gracefully cross my path. I really wish there were more dungeon crawlers like this.
*Spoilers Kinda?*
I have fond memories of being terrified by the accursed crypts, using my trusted Silver Rapier to navigate the evil tunnels while my ex struggle to get through as they were using the Stone Club. Of beating Crilall for the first time prior to the 1.0 update and just mindlessly exploring the Serpent Sanctum or whatever it was called at the time. Finding the VHS tapes on my own felt so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cool when I finally got to piece it together. Grahhh

The game is free, and it can be fun, but it has some flaws which are rather annoying overall.

1. There is no scaling- many RTS games have either a research tree-- or time-based scaling (Men of War, Ostfront, Other Supreme Commander games etc- make you wait to produce certain units as to not flood the map with strong units first. This does not exist in Zero-K, where all units are available immediately outside of units that have a long build-time (still doesnt stop these from being made immediately however.)

2. The games "auto-micro" often goes against good micro strategies. It makes it such that the AI can kite your own units away from where they're meant to be, and thus they're picked off. This is made more evident when fighting swarms of enemies or playing the Chickens game mode. Units will auto-micro into the swarm or walk directly into units getting killed, instead of moving away or towards other units for help. The other side is telling all of your units to hold position, which just leaves them open to being killed if you're not babysitting them.

3. Odd Construction. Outside of a lack of a tech-tree or time-based waiting to construct certain things, the ETA on building will be a wild estimate of times based off your resource production, or said thing will just have an obscene time-limit em-placed on its construction (which seems to be health or material based.) On-top of that, as far as I know, there's no way to cancel somethings construction or to remove a built structure from an area. This can lead to many issues such as mexes becoming unbuildable between solar panels, units shooting unfinished buildings, or at worse, a partially built geothermal plant blowing up on your own units (thankfully hasn't happened to me in a multiplayer match)

4. Unit friendly fire. Many units cannot shoot over other units or buildings, which is fine, until the game auto micro's said unit into directly killing your other units. Its already hard enough trying to form a descent firing line and getting units to be un-clumped when moving through areas, the last thing I need is for my Ronin or Pyro bot to start killing other units because they are unable to hold fire unless commanded to do so manually.

5. The game is said to "have no meta". This is untrue, as any game can and will have a meta, and for Zero-K it is evident that certain strategies work better than others. This is made worse when you play against a player who only uses said strategies. And once you beat them, they then take said strategy you used to beat them and only use that instead. Zero creativity among them, it is horrid seeing someone do the same thing over and over again. At least Brutal AI willingly use other strategies or starting factories compared to meta-obsessed technical individuals.

Beyond that the game can be fun, but it has its glaring issues or lacks certain features you'd expect from other examples.
