lol Fair enough. I work for a living, for one. I've been on Steam for nearly 20 years, for two. In that time a LOT of bundle sites have come and gone, plus tons of giveaways, and of course, sales. I just don't typically buy anything at full price and most of my library wasn't bought individually. I haven't played everything I own and I will probably die before I do so, but someone will inherit this some day. Some people like to spend $80 on drinks every week, I like to buy tons of cheap-ass games.

EARLY ACCESS REVIEW
It's janky as all hell, but that's kind of the point. It's got great atmosphere and some genuine moments where your skin might crawl, but the true gem is simply sharing some great laughs with your friends as you call out a ghost's name repeatedly to peeve it off. With some serious TLC, this game could be a whole lot better than it is, but what it is is still pretty workable and a riot with your pals.

I just read your Bright Memory review and while we came to different conclusions about the game, I found all of your points to be fair and well explained. I checked out your review section and was delighted how well you structure and write them (and how many you've poured out).

It has been a tremendously long time since I've played a Telltale game and not because they're known to be bad but rather because the things they have always promised have never really panned out and well, like many people out there, I was just tired of their product. Yet I had forgotten that behind the endless barrage of samey licensed adventure games,

there were some truly talented and creative people behind each one and I'm sure that had they had better leadership, the company might still be around today, doing truly wonderful things. At the end of the day, despite how deterministic their narratives might be, if given the right chance, they could still tell a terrific yarn and Batman is pretty dang nifty, if I may be so bold.

As always, the game presents you with choices throughout its 5 episodes that feel weighty and can impact the narrative, but are ultimately meaningless in the long run. However, they feel much better than previous Telltale outings, having early choices irrevocably resonate throughout the game, meaning that while you can't derail the story, you can at least change its perspective on several occasions,

some that make far more sense in one route than the other. An example would be Bruce visiting a hospital with flowers in hand and just laughing it off while a different path might show you a more interesting reason for why he was carrying them in the first place. In the end, no matter what you choose to do, there's no situation in which he won't be carrying flowers.

It's this kind of thing that had many people disembark the Telltale gravy train, but with much time away, I was able to enjoy my time with Batman (running it twice, no less) far more than I would have at the height of Telltale's popularity. I'd even go so far as to say it's an excellent adventure game and more importantly, it's a terrific Batman yarn. Rather than concentrate on the choices, I was able to enjoy the mystery of what was happening and sit back as it slowly unfolded before me.

Players may be pleased to note that this is not a revisiting of Batman's origins, but is a unique take on the universe set early on in Batman's career during Harvey Dent's electoral bid for mayor (think around the Year One era). Perhaps reinforcing that Batman is the most "played with" character across all media, Telltale's entry into the multiverse features several familiar characters that fans from any medium will be able to identify - with some more obscure treats for the comic book fans -

but they might not quite be what you expect. In many ways, it feels like Telltale took a lot of cues from Nolan's trilogy, but this game exists apart from it wholesale, so no worries about retreading those tales. The result is both fresh and familiar and I was thoroughly delighted with what they'd done. More importantly, the biggest draw of this adventure is that you spend quite a lot of time playing as and exploring the character of Bruce Wayne.

While most of the video game world has always had Batman strictly in the suit beating up thugs and classic villains with maybe the occasional section as Wayne, a lot of Telltale's narrative hinges on who Wayne is both with and without the cape and cowl and you spend probably as much time in a three-piece suit as you do in the Batsuit. It's refreshing to be able to explore that side of Batman as never before and Troy Baker

That's not to imply that Batman is a walking simulator, mind you, as it is full of action sequences and also really leans into the detective aspect of the character, which fits really well within this genre. However, the action is little more than a series of really-easy quicktime events (seriously, if you're failing these, you probably need to be doing something else with your life) and the detective work is pretty straight-forward - I honestly can't think of any of these as puzzles - but both provide welcome breathers from exhausting dialog trees which is the bulk of the game.
